The test determines the level of knowledge of the English language and divides students into 5 groups - from initial (elementary) level to advanced.
The test tests knowledge of language structures (36 questions) and vocabulary (24 questions). In total, you need to answer 60 questions, each of which is given a choice of one of four answers. If you do not know the correct answer to a question and do not mark anything, then the answer will be considered incorrect.

Start QuizGreetings, my wonderful reader.
Remember how I said more than once that only a small proportion of people who study a foreign language are truly confident in their level? So, today I decided to fight the war with such uncertainty and offer you one of the best weapons on this path - online test for knowledge of English!
« Ha, - you say. - As if this would immediately make us feel better! »
It will, believe me.
So, in front of you 4 tests for different levels of knowledge. If you don't know which one to approach, start with the first one. In general, below I explain in detail how to work with them in order to understand what stage you are at at the moment.
Why you should take the time to determine your level of knowledge:
- You will understand where you are.
You know what they say in Asia: "If you don't know where you are, how can you know where to go?! When learning English, everything is completely identical. Not only for beginners, but also for those continuing to study, it is extremely important to understand.
- You will understand your weaknesses and strengths.
Just as athletes determine their weaknesses and strengths, we must understand what we do better and what we do worse. And work on it.
How the assessment works:
- Choose if you already have a suspicion what it is. But if this is not the case, you can go through these stages from beginning to end. I have prepared 4 options of varying complexity: Elementary (approximately for 6th grade school and above), (for confident average people), Upper-Intermediate (above average) and (high bar).
- Take a short test. You can complete it in a maximum of 10-15 minutes, because there are no more than 10 questions. But even for these 10 questions I can already give you a full assessment.
- Receive recommendations from a professional teacher.
- If the recommendations provided are not enough for you or you have questions about the number of points scored, I will be happy to help you - knock on the door!
- If you need a detailed analysis of the answers with explanations, I provide a paid Skype consultation (30-45 minutes).
And, voila - you are a happy person who knows where to move next. But remember that simply determining your current point is not enough. We need to raise it. Read about this and much more on the pages of my blog or in the newsletter.
By the way, below I have highlighted the page in red where you can take online grammar tests on various topics. There you can see your correct and incorrect answers, and in some places even use hints!
Today our article will focus on how to find out your language proficiency level and why such knowledge is needed.
How are the levels divided according to the two options adopted by the British Council and developed within the framework of the Language Learning for European Citizenship project?
As you already understood, there are traditionally two options within which you can find out your language level. Following the recommendations of the British Council, there are six levels of English proficiency:
- Basic;
- Elementary;
- Pre-Intermediate;
- Intermediate;
- Upper-Intermediate;
- Advanced.
Each level involves assessing knowledge and skills in speaking, understanding material and writing. The elementary level is characterized by the ability to tell minimal information about oneself and others, and solve life situations that arise. You should also understand key expressions that convey the main meaning and be able to compose a sentence.
With each new level, new requirements are added to communication, comprehension and writing, as a result of which the student must master the maximum set of knowledge in order to receive the highest score. At the Upper-Intermediate level, everyone taking the test must be able to use formal language and be proficient in informal style; remember information and be able to retell it; communicate freely with several opponents; understand the speech of the interlocutor on the phone. When reading texts, a person must understand ideas and grasp thoughts. Equally important is the ability to write various letters, masterfully coping with grammatical and syntactic structures.
So, how to determine the level of English proficiency according to the Council of Europe scale?
Elementary language proficiency is represented by two levels - A1 and A2. These levels are considered elementary, but a person who has begun to learn a foreign language should already understand some words, ask questions and be able to talk about himself. Often such levels are called survival levels in a foreign country.
Sufficient language proficiency is considered at two levels – B1 and B2. As part of the first of them, it is necessary to express thoughts in most situations and be able to describe your interests. Level B2 is characterized by understanding fairly complex texts. Communication is no longer limited to the individual; the vocabulary allows you to communicate on abstract topics, when you can skillfully defend your thoughts. Advanced levels C1 and C2 are characterized by a complete understanding of what is happening and confident command of the language, regardless of areas of communication.
Where can I find out my level of English proficiency?
You can do this at home online in a comfortable environment where you will not worry. You can start with the “Beginner” level, and if you score more than 18 points out of a possible 20, be sure to go through the next level.
You can determine your level online. After passing, you will not only learn the result, but also be able to receive a certificate that will help you take your first confident steps up the career ladder.

Reviews:
Thank you for making this English test available online! It was sent to me by a friend who, having accurately determined her level, managed to prepare and got a job in a Western company. I was also about to have an interview in English at a Western company. I was very worried, and I needed to be convinced of my abilities, since I had not practiced the language for a very long time. To my surprise, at the interview I came across an almost identical test. I passed it with ease. Thank you! Svetlana, Moscow
I am grateful to fate that I came across this particular test to test my English at a recruitment agency! I had previously completed it and already knew the correct answers. Maxim, St. Petersburg
