Igor Krutoy’s songs are included in the repertoire of not only Ukrainian and Russian performers, but also world-class show business stars. He is the People's Artist of two countries, the owner of several radio stations, the founder of one of the most productive vocal competitions - “New Wave”. But what do fans know about his biography, personal life and career path?

Biography of Igor Krutoy

Igor Krutoy was born in the small Ukrainian town of Gaivoron on the banks of the Southern Bug River in the summer of 1954. A modest Jewish family with two children - besides Igor, their daughter Alla also grew up in it - had nothing to do with either the world of art or the world of music. Mom took care of the children and the house, and dad worked at a local factory that produced radio components.

Igor’s mother was the first to notice his love for music, and she brought him to the local music school. Within a couple of years, the boy became an accompanist at all school matinees and holidays - he mastered the piano. At the age of 14, Igor Krutoy founded his own school musical ensemble, which was invited not only to conduct discos within the school, but also to city events.

After school, Igor graduated from a specialized school in Kirovograd and became a teacher at a music school in his hometown and in one of the secondary schools in the suburbs. Thus began the career of the most sought-after composer of our time in the post-Soviet space, America and Europe.

Career path of Igor Krutoy

Not wanting to stop there, in 1975 Igor entered the conducting department of the Music Pedagogical Institute in Nikolaevsk. It was there, in 1979, that he was noticed by representatives of the Moscow orchestra “Panorama” and invited to the capital. Just a year later, the young talented man moved to the Blue Guitars, and then became the leader of the ensemble of the legendary Valentina Tolkunova.

In parallel with his career growth, Igor Krutoy continued his musical education - he graduated from the faculty of composers at the Saratov Conservatory named after Sobin. He gave his first song to his closest friend, Alexander Serov. The singer still shines with her - the song “Madonna” has become Serov’s calling card.

Having heard Krutoy’s songs performed by Serov, other stars became interested in them, and very soon the “piggy banks” of Vaikule, Leontyev, Buinov and other Russian performers were replenished with Igor’s creations.

Creativity and awards of Igor Krutoy

The compositional works of Igor Krutoy are unique works. His creativity is not limited to the stage. Igor collaborates with world and Russian opera performers, writes instrumental compositions, music for films, sings, creates production centers, radio channels, and is a patron of competitions for young performers.

For his creativity and social activities, Igor Yakovlevich was awarded such awards as

  • People's Artist of Russia and Ukraine,
  • two orders “For Merit to the Fatherland”,
  • title of Honored Artist,
  • Prize of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Lenin Komsomol (1989),
  • Order of Friendship, MUZ-TV Award,
  • title of honorary citizen of Jurmala,
  • memorial sign on the “Square of Stars” in Moscow,
  • personal gratitude to the President of the Russian Federation for his contribution to the development of young talents.

An important milestone in Krutoy’s work was his promotion in Europe and America. In 2010, the composer began collaborating with Lara Fabian, who introduced his works to the opera world.

Personal life of Igor Krutoy

Igor Yakovlevich's first marriage was unsuccessful, the couple quickly separated, despite the birth of their son Nikolai. The divorce was complicated, scandalous, with the division of an apartment and a child. For a long time, Igor Krutoy’s ex-wife forbade him to communicate with his son, the composer began to drink often, but his strong will and common sense allowed him to stay awake and find solace in creativity.

Krutoy found his true happiness 15 long years after his divorce from his first wife. At one of the parties organized by Alla Pugacheva, the composer met Olga, an American of Russian origin. It was she who gave him peace, new strength for creativity, and made him believe in himself again.

The family has two daughters – adopted Vika and native Sasha. But Olga and Igor do not separate the girls, and do not emphasize the fact that one of them was not born by them. The youngest Sasha has health problems - autism. Her parents and older sister had to make every effort to ensure that the disease did not affect the girl’s socialization and education. And the efforts were not in vain - Alexandra lives an active life.

What is Igor Krutoy doing now?

Igor Yakovlevich is always on the move, always busy with something. He lives in two countries - he does his own business in Russia, his family lives in America. In addition to the “New Wave”, this year Igor Yakovlevich was also involved in the “You are Super!” project. And he became not just a member of the jury, but also a close friend, a mentor to one of the contestants. Moreover, he and his wife Olga decided to pay for the girl’s further specialized education and buy her an apartment in Moscow.

Despite having health problems, Krutoy is actively involved in composing, producing, and releasing new albums of instrumental music. And, it seems, he is not going to give up his positions and give up the palm in anything or anyone.

I remembered this anti-Semitic courtyard teasing in this connection: in the Soviet country, people with clearly Jewish surnames, given names and patronymics lived, to put it mildly, uncomfortable. They tried not to let them into any profession, especially public ones, not to give them leadership positions, not to admit them to prestigious universities...

After the formation of the State of Israel, the phrase “go to your Israel” became a catchphrase! But at first it was not easy to leave, even if you wanted to. The state created many obstacles. It was necessary to leave the ranks of the CPSU, leave work so as not to “disgrace the work collective,” wait a long time for permission to leave, not be associated with any state secrets, etc., etc., etc.

Those who, for whatever reason, did not want to leave often hid “behind a pseudonym” and changed their names and patronymics. So Arkady Steinbok became Arkady Arkanov, Grigory Ovshtein - Grigory Gorin, Larisa Kudelman - Larisa Dolina, Emil Rabinovich - Emil Radov, Ilya Klyaver - Ilya Oleinikov, and even the great Leonid Osipovich Utesov could not have gained so many regalia if he had remained under his own name, patronymic and surname - Lazar Iosifovich Weisbein.

According to the same model, “our people” turned from Moses into Mikhails, Samuels into Semenovs, Arons into Arkadievs, Israels into Igors, etc.

True, there was a category of “untouchables”: Arkady Raikin, Samuil Marshak, Faina Ranevskaya, Serafima Birman, Mark Bernes, Maya Plisetskaya, Asaf Messerer, Yuri Fayer, Leonid Kogan, David Oistrakh, Emil Gilels, Lev Kerbel, Valentin Pluchek, Lev Sverdlin, Mikhail Kozakov, Sergei Eisenstein, Grigory Roshal, Zinovy Roizman, Dmitry Pokrass, Matvey Blanter, Isaac Dunaevsky, Arkady Ostrovsky, Sigismund Katz, Mark Fradkin, Oscar Feltsman, Ian Frenkel, Vladimir Shainsky, Joseph Kobzon, Alexander Rosenbaum, Alexander Shirvindt, Valentin Gaft , Galina Volchek, Elina Bystritskaya, Vladimir Etush, Sergei Yursky, Zinovy Gerdt, Mikhail Botvinnik, Mikhail Tal and some others.

Of course, they all experienced difficulties in receiving honorary titles, increasing concert rates, going on foreign tours, and being appointed to leadership positions, but these were “stars” of the first magnitude, each in their own field, and it was impossible to do without them.

The above list is far from complete. You can add leading doctors, professors, and scientists to it. Most of them lived under their own names and surnames. The state needed to demonstrate to the whole world that there is no anti-Semitism in the USSR, Jews are not persecuted and exist “happily”, like everyone else. In fact, it was a complete lie at the highest level towards the Jewish people as a whole.

Many Jews, whenever possible, tried to take the Russian surnames of their wives; if this happened, the surname of the parent who was of non-Jewish nationality. So, Andrei Mironov, with all his love for his father, Alexander Semenovich Menaker, nevertheless became Mironov. Although, as eyewitnesses claimed, in the Mironov-Menaker duet the most talented was the father, and the mother, Maria Vladimirovna, became the People's Artist (remember that in the Soviet Union, nationality was officially determined by the father).

Exceptions were made by mutual consent of the parents and for chocolates to the registry office employees.

Much, of course, depended on the organization where this or that citizen of the “great multinational country” worked.

For example, Moscow concert organizations were a real Jewish fiefdom. There, restrictions were observed in the issue of going on tour, abroad, conferring titles, but otherwise, the “national minority” prevailed.

Among the singers: Joseph Kobzon, Vadim Mulerman, Emil Gorobets, Mikhail Kotlyar, Maya Kristalinskaya, Larisa Dolina, Nina Brodska, Aida Vedishcheva, Maria Lukach and others; accompanist David Ashkenazi, Mikhail Shufutinsky, Igor Krutoy, Boris Mandrus, Vitaly Kretyuk.

Musical directors of the groups: Pavel Slobodkin, Alexander Bronevitsky, Igor Granov, Robert Bolotny, Oleg Milshtein, Vladimir Rubashevsky, Victor Vikshtein, Mikhail Plotkin.

Concert administrators: Felix Katz, Lev Melamedman, Lyudmila Uspenskaya, Mark Bendersky, Arkady Furman, Tamara Gerzon and others.

Department of Satire and Humor - in general... Mark Mirov, Lev Novitsky, Alexander Shurov, Efim Berezin, Igor Divov, Elizaveta Auerbakh, Marta Tsifrinovich, Alexander Livshits, Alexander Levenbuk, Gennady Khazanov, Efim Shifrin, Klara Novikova.

Of the 40 entertainers, only Boris Brunov, Sergei Dityatev, Igor Kirichuk and Oleg Marusev were not Jews. Even Yevgeny Petrosyan’s mother was Jewish. Elena Vorobey - nee Lebenbaum, Lolita Milyavskaya - Gorelik, Lion Izmailov - Pole and many others.

But in the Committee on Radio and Television there was a real ban on hiring Jews with obvious surnames. There were very few exceptions: Yuri Levitan, who made his name famous with the reports of the Information Bureau during the war; Vadim Sinyavsky, there simply weren’t such excellent football commentators back then; Livshits and Levenbuk, as famous actors, hosted “Baby Monitor”; Margarita Esquina headed the youth editorial office (she was hired given the “place in the sun” of her father, the director of the House of Actors of the WTO). During the “thaw”, the music editorial team was strengthened by young forces: Leonid Sandler (son of the famous composer Oscar Sandler), Evgeny Ginzburg (son of the writer), Boris

Purgalin (also through connections).

For many years, sports journalist and commentator Arkady Ratner worked his way into the television staff. The following story happened with Leonid Yakubovich: he conducted auctions, presentations, and beauty contests. They were shown on TV. They got used to Leonid Arkadyevich, and when Vlad Listyev left Field of Miracles, they couldn’t find a better presenter. Yakubovich was hired by Channel One.

The fate of Lev Novozhenov is interesting. He was assigned to host programs about “unhappy” Jews who emigrated and did not find happiness in Israel, Germany or the USA.

Several Jews, listed as Russians on their passports, also worked on TV. Anatoly Grigorievich Lysenko, a real television personality, a talented journalist and organizer who has made a great career in the media. Maryana Krasnyanskaya, who created the program “With all my heart” for Valentina Leontyeva. Vladimir Voroshilov, the creator and presenter of the series “What, where, when?”, worked only behind the scenes for many years, so as not to show his Jewish profile to “respected viewers.”

Freelance authors Muratov and Axelrod came up with the game KVN. Subsequently, all the best team captains were Jews: Yuli Gusman, Alexander Khait, Yan Levenzon, Efim Nukhimzon, Yuri Radzievsky and the entire “Odessa Gentlemen’s Club”.

Has the situation with the “Jewish question” in Russia changed at present? True, on Jewish holidays a huge seven-branched candlestick is displayed even on Red Square. Community centers with their own kindergartens, schools, and charitable departments to assist the elderly are opened at synagogues.

Jewish oligarchs and rich people provide financial support to such organizations. All this is outside the state. Thank you for allowing it and not closing it.

In the State Duma, out of 450 deputies, there are about 25 Jews and “half-Jews”. Many of them treat Jews purely formally. Some have one parent, others even less, grandparents.

As for television, there are a little more Jewish names: I. Urgant, V Soloviev, B. Notkin, A Maksimov, L. Zakoshansky, V. Gomelsky, B. Berman, A. Gordon and some others.

And yet, in percentage terms, this is a “drop in the bucket.”

A recent case was very typical: Leonid Isaakovich Yarmolnik decided to run for the Moscow City Duma. The election headquarters was immediately puzzled. They frantically began looking for a second citizenship from the candidate. As a result, the “chicken tobacco” (Yarmolnik’s nickname) did not get into the Duma. And the Cossack Nadezhda Babkina passed. Naturally!

In general, it is surprising when famous artists suddenly rush into politics.

What is missing? Fame, love from the audience, money, popularity, concerts, corporate events, foreign tours? With few exceptions, these attempts are unsuccessful.

In Russia, the national issue will always be on the agenda!

Krutoy is concerned about the well-being of his beloved composer, how his health is today, and whether it is true that he was struck by a serious and merciless illness.

Previously, in one of the programs, a man said that he had cancer, and in numerous photos he looked tired and haggard.

The first bells

Concerns about the composer’s health began back in 2009, there was talk of cancer, but it turned out that Igor Yakovlevich only had a cyst on his pancreas. Then in Donetsk in 2011, at a football match, the artist became ill and was hospitalized by ambulance with a high fever. Then everything was attributed to a cold and a course of antibiotic treatment was given.

Fans had long suspected that the man was ill; in the last photographs of 2017, Igor’s appearance worried them so much that they left comments about a speedy recovery.

The scandal with Channel One greatly shook the composer’s body. Krutoy did not want to share the right to own the airwaves of such programs as “Song of the Year” and “New Wave” with Konstantin Ernst. As a result, not only programs with the participation of Igor Yakovlevich, but also his songs disappeared from television screens for a long time. And only the intervention of Sergei Kozhevnikov, the owner of the Russian Media Group, helped return everything to normal.

Personal life

It is known that the artist’s first wife left him when he was not yet so popular and the composer took this breakup very hard. Moreover, the wife prevented meetings with her son. The second wife of Igor Yakovlevich was an American of Russian origin, Olga.

The woman has nothing to do with creativity, she has her own business in America, so the family lives in two countries. For his wife’s daughter, Victoria, Igor became a real father, and in 2003 the couple had a joint daughter, Alexandra.

Due to her husband’s employment, Olga took upon herself all the worries of running the household and raising children.

She also monitors the state of the composer's real estate:

several apartments in New York;

houses in Miami;

prestigious apartments in Monaco.

Causes of anxiety

Fans know about the illness of Igor Yakovlevich Krutoy, that he has undergone several operations, but the man himself does not cover his well-being in the press today. The man’s relatives do not confirm the diagnosis of cancer, but it became known that the artist has long suffered from diabetes, which is what caused his sudden weight loss.

He is forced to stick to a diet, which greatly upsets his wife, who loves to cook.

Recently, the artist signed a contract to participate in the show “You are Super,” but was forced to abandon it due to deteriorating condition. However, his official representative reassured fans by saying that the composer would soon appear on the judging team again.

Although Igor’s health leaves much to be desired, this does not prevent him from doing charity work; he holds various events for disabled children and gives young talents a chance to express themselves free of charge.

The artist himself once admitted that his illness made him look at life differently.

Today, Krutoy Igor Yakovlevich is in good shape, his health has improved, and all media rumors about his illness can be considered unfounded. This is evidenced by the recently released joint video with Angelika Varum. And the cancellation of the composer’s participation in some programs occurred in connection with the examination and treatment planned in advance.
