Hardware and operating system

iPhone X relies on the all-new A11 Bionic processor, which has six 64-bit cores. They operate with a nominal clock frequency of 2.5 GHz and are equipped with a high-performance graphics accelerator. It also has an M11 coprocessor and a neural engine on board, the characteristics of which allow it to support machine learning and artificial intelligence.

The chipset itself is produced using a 10-nanometer process technology, which can significantly reduce energy consumption, but at the same time improves the performance of the smartphone. Thanks to the Apple A11, the iPhone 10 is faster than some MacBook Pro 13” 2017. Inside there is also 3 GB of RAM, 64 or 256 GB of internal memory to choose from.

This iPhone model comes pre-installed with the iOS 11 operating system, which will be released on September 19.

Cameras in iPhone 10

iPhone 10 received a pair of 12-megapixel main camera modules with a dual optical stabilizer. The first has an aperture of f/1.8, and the second has f/2.4. These are good indicators among current mobile solutions. The front camera has a 7-megapixel lens with support for Retina Flash and HDR.

Or a cheaper iPhone turned into an iPhone XR. A real revolution has happened for this branch of smartphones. A huge, frameless screen, a new processor, a pumped-up battery, a portrait mode in the camera and a bunch of new colors. Just a bomb!

Until recently, the flagship acquired a successor - the iPhone XS. Same size, but more advanced smartphone for the same money.

But s jumped over everyone and turned to the iPhone XS Max. The same functions as the XS, only with a huge screen and more pleasant battery life.

And now more details. Let's go through the chronology of the presentation.

iPhone XS

Successor and star of the program. It costs a thousand dollars in the database, just like the previous ten.

Design

His main feature remained in place. The 5.8-inch screen retains the same resolution of 2436 by 1125 pixels, which give a density of 458 ppi.

In addition, the Neural Engine, thanks to the Core ML platform, is up to 9 times faster than the corresponding system in the A11 Bionic. At the same time, the neural unit consumes 10 times less energy.

Cameras

Compared to the top ten, the new smartphone has not received any changes in numbers. Modules of 12 megapixels each are installed on the back. The six-element lens boasts an aperture of f/1.8 for the regular lens and f/2.4 for the telephoto. In addition, there is dual optical stabilization.

With exactly the same numbers, Apple claims that the quality of the images has improved. Several new technologies contribute to this.

Take Smart HDR, for example, which is responsible for improved processing of light and dark areas in pictures. In addition, algorithms have learned to determine depth of field even more accurately in portrait mode. For this, the “Depth” function or variable aperture is also used: from f/1.4 to f/16 - any value. You can adjust the degree of blur both directly during the shooting process and after, in the Photo application.

Let me remind you that until now, variable aperture was found only in the Samsung Galaxy S9, and. Moreover, in Korean flagships, physical aperture blades are responsible for this, which either narrow or open. How things are going with the iPhone XS is still unknown. Most likely, the software is responsible for the process.

In addition, “Depth” is also available for the TrueDepth front camera.

Regarding video recording, the improvements are purely evolutionary. More detailed elaboration of dark areas, improved picture in poor lighting and finally stereo sound recording. Surprisingly, until recently, not a single iPhone could record stereo. This gap has now been closed.

iPhone XS Max

Let's look at the most expensive and most sophisticated device, and at the same time determine how it differs from the iPhone XS. The main difference was the huge, frameless 6.5-inch screen.

For such a diagonal, engineers had to increase the resolution to 2688 x 1242 pixels. However, in total they give a density of the same 458 pixels per inch.

iPhone XR

This is, so to speak, an entry-level smartphone. The most affordable, with the latest hardware, now with a frameless screen, Face ID, a new processor and a relatively compact body. Despite the 6.1-inch LCD panel.

A whole bunch of new colors makes you think about repeating the experience with the iPhone 5C? Bad experience. I am sure that a new approach with a bunch of colors at the start will be much more successful. By the way, the photo below shows all the available colors. There are a lot of them, they are all bright and juicy.

It’s a bit of a shame that the smartphone was equipped with an IPS screen, and not an AMOLED screen, as in its older brothers. However, current goodies, including, for example, True Tone and the P3 profile, are still announced.

Like its more sophisticated relatives, the XR received a top-end processor. And I’m betting in advance that this particular smartphone will become the most productive in the company’s history. The situation is repeated when the device received a powerful processor, but a noticeably smaller number of pixels to process them. Hence the superiority, which, however, is noticeable only in synthetic tests.

There is one camera installed at the back, but it is “completely new”:

• optical stabilization

The most important thing is that even with one camera, portrait mode is now available. Now, those who want to save money will not be left behind by modern photo technologies. This makes me happy.

The front camera can also blur the background, and like all other smartphones with daylight, studio and contour light effects. The “Depth” mode is in place.

It is also important to mention autonomy. The new product lasts an hour and a half longer than . A decent indicator.

Which iPhone models will be shown in September 2018?

So, all summer long we've been reading rumors about three iPhone models. And as the experience of past years shows, the probability of the appearance of exactly three new iPhone models is almost 100 percent.

iPhone XS (iPhone 5.8 inches and iPhone 6.5 inches)

First, it’s worth talking about two models that will differ only in size (iPhone 5.8 inches and iPhone 6.5 inches). In all other respects, they must be identical.

Based on the pictures from the summer, I think absolutely everyone already knows that all three devices will receive exactly the same design as the current iPhone X.

What I'm talking about now is that the cutout for Face ID remains. True, the budget model, which we will talk about a little further, will still receive some differences.

I have collected all the facts about the iPhone XS that are currently known (the information is based on rumors):

• Name. The word “Plus” will definitely not be in the title. According to recent rumors, there will certainly be an "iPhone XS".
• Colors. There will be three colors: Gold, Space Gray and Silver. Both leaks and invitations to the presentation speak about the appearance of the golden color.
• Screen and dimensions. iPhone XS 5.8 inches: dimensions - 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7 mm, resolution - 2435 x 1125, 458 dpi, OLED. iPhone XS 6.5 inches: dimensions - 157.53 x 77.44 x 7.85 mm, resolution - 2688 x 1242, 458 dpi, OLED.
• Performance. Apple A12 processor (using 7nm process technology) and 4GB of RAM.
• Camera. There were the fewest rumors about this moment. There was talk of three lenses in 2019, but almost nothing about this generation.
• Main features. There have been many rumors about support for 2 SIM cards, as well as the addition of a new charging adapter (18 W power adapter and Lightning to USB-C cable).

The same can be said about the Lightning to 3.5 mm adapter, which should be removed this year. So now, if necessary, you will have to buy it separately.

iPhone 11 or iPhone 9 (6.1 inches)?

The budget model should be the sensation of this year. It will use cheaper materials and a simplified camera.

The name of the device is not clear at all. In the title I wrote about possible versions of the iPhone 9 or iPhone 11, but it’s hard to guess what will actually happen.

The information here is less accurate than with previous models, but it is still there:

• Name. Possibly iPhone 9 or iPhone 11.
• Colors. There is no exact detail, but based on rumors, it will be Grey, White, Blue and Orange.
• Screen and dimensions. Screen 6.1 inches, LCD display, 320 or 330 dpi, dimensions - 150.91 x 75.72 x 8.47 mm.
• Performance. It is possible that the future A12 will be replaced by the A11. 3 GB RAM, same as iPhone 8 Plus.
• Camera. Instead of two lenses, there will be one. Therefore, we expect the absence of portrait mode and other features that depend on the second camera.
• Main differences. They will save money here and this is quite normal. In addition to materials, an LCD display and a single-lens camera, we expect the absence of 3D Touch technology.

As you can see, there are a lot of inaccuracies. But perhaps this is for the better, because at least something should surprise us at the future presentation. Now, by the way, more about her.

When will the new iPhone come out in 2018?

The 6.5-inch iPhone XS will be Apple's smartphone with the largest display ever. At the same time, the model will not turn out to be a really huge “shovel”. By reducing the display bezels, Apple will be able to squeeze a huge 6.5-inch OLED display into a body with the dimensions of a 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus. This means that the dimensions of the 6.5-inch iPhone XS will be approximately 158.4 x 78.1 x 7.5 mm (most likely a little larger).

The new iPhone XS will receive a design almost completely identical to the iPhone X - at most, some small details will change, which we will only learn about at the presentation. But what will Apple surprise in terms of design? There is an answer - a new color.

Apple will release the 5.8- and 6.5-inch iPhone XS in a completely new gold color. For clarity, we have posted the official image of the new Apple smartphones, which was accidentally leaked onto the Internet, once again. Apple has never painted any of its smartphones this color before. The difference with the usual gold color, well known to everyone from previous iPhones, is visible to the naked eye.

New gold color, never seen before

In total, the iPhone XS will be released in three colors. The new golden color will be accompanied by “space gray” and silver.

The new iPhone XS will be equipped with 5.8- and 6.5-inch full-format OLED displays with minimal bezels. The display resolution of the 5.8-inch iPhone XS will be 1125x2436 pixels. The resolution of the enlarged 6.5-inch iPhone XS is 1242×2688 pixels.

Other screen characteristics of the new iPhone XS are unknown. Analysts expect display improvements to be quite dramatic. The 6.5-inch iPhone XS will be hit especially hard. Apple will definitely want to equip its largest iPhone in history with the best display. In addition to the standard increase in brightness, contrast and color spectrum, it is expected that the display will have some unique feature.

Experts are inclined to believe that this feature will be support for ProMotion technology, which allows you to increase the display frequency to 120 Hz. This unique technology is currently supported exclusively on the latest iPad Pro models.

It is also known that Samsung and LG Display will produce displays for the iPhone XS. Most of the orders will be taken over by South Korean competitor Apple.

The Apple A12 chip will work 60-70% faster than the A11 Bionic due to the use of a new technological process in its creation. It is known that the production of the A12 processor will be carried out by TSMC, which will use the 7-nanometer FinFET process to create chips. For comparison, the A11 Bionic chip, which is used in the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, is made using a 10nm process technology.

The performance gain of the A12 chip compared to the A11 will be from 30 to 70%. In addition, the chip is 40% more energy efficient. This means that iPhone XS will be able to work longer without the need to recharge.

iPhone XS vs. iPhone 9

Back in June 2018, testing results for the iPhone XS appeared on the official website of the Geekbench benchmark. Thanks to this, it became known that one of the iPhone XS prototypes scored 4673 points in single-core mode and 10912 points in multi-core mode. These figures are 10-20% higher than the iPhone X.

The RAM capacity of the 5.8- and 6.5-inch iPhone XS will be 4 GB. Thus, the new Apple smartphones will be the first in the line with such a large amount of RAM. Apple, as you know, does not stuff the iPhone with RAM just “to have it.” Definitely, the new iPhone XS needed an increased amount of RAM to successfully perform completely new functions. Experts believe that most of these functions will be related to smartphone cameras in one way or another.
