One of the best baritones of our time, the owner of a sensual timbre, who knows all the secrets of bel canto, was born into an average Soviet family. In Krasnoyarsk . Dad is an engineer, mom is a doctor. What's unusual? Only a unique voice that sounded very early. From the age of 4, Dima performed Russian romances quite professionally and folk songs. And while his classmates were puffing away at problems and equations, he played scales and sang in music school. Maybe he already understood then: he had a different purpose. Or maybe I liked music lessons more.

Outstanding teachers from the Krasnoyarsk Institute of Arts helped him hone his singing technique. The main one among them is Professor Ekaterina Iofel.

A happy father with children (from left to right): Maria (the daughter of the singer’s first wife, whom he adopted), 21-year-old Danila and 21-year-old Alexandra (children from his first marriage with ballerina Svetlana Ivanova), 10-year-old Nina, in the second row - 15-year-old Maxim. After college, Dmitry’s career went like clockwork: solo roles at the Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theater, victories at international competitions.

In 1989 he won first place at International competition vocalists "Singer of the World" in Cardiff (Wales). What's behind this? Firstly, world fame, secondly, contracts with the best opera stages. La Scala, Royal Theater Covent Garden, Metropolitan Opera... Any works for any audience. At least for a big one opera stage, even in a chamber hall or a concert under open air. Hvorostovsky was capable of everything and his talent: from the most complex opera parts to Russian romances, from Italian songs to Soviet hits. He sang romances by Fauré, Tchaikovsky, Taneyev, Liszt and Rachmaninoff. One of his favorite roles was Rigoletto in the opera of the same name “Verdi... One day he pulled out a completely unexpected trick - he began collaborating with the pop composer Igor Krutoy. Hvorostovsky released a video for his song “You and Me”.

It seemed that life had given him everything in a spoonful: talent, his wife - the beautiful half-French, half-Italian Florence, and five children in the shops. Not to mention the fact that Hvorostovsky himself looked incredibly impressive not only on stage, but also in life. Strong, handsome, dives into an ice hole, goes on a boat along the Yenisei. And suddenly an illness... A few years ago, his concerts in Moscow were canceled due to problems with his voice. At that time, no one suspected anything fatal—problems with the voice of opera performers do happen. But two years ago, like a bolt from the blue, Dmitry was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Everyone believed that he would cope with this disaster. He is strong, he is Siberian. Alas, the disease turned out to be stronger.

The tragic news about the death of Dmitry Hvorostovsky was confirmed to us by a friend, like-minded person and colleague of Dmitry Hvorostovsky, conductor Konstantin Orbelyan.

They have been working together for twenty years. We held hundreds of concerts, dozens of projects, recorded 23 CDs, and many television shows. It was whole life in music.

I managed to say goodbye to Dmitry yesterday at nine o’clock in the evening. And early this morning his wife Florence called me and said that Dima had died a minute ago. It was at 3.30 am. He died in a hospital in London.

Unfortunately, the fight for his life ended today.

I can’t say that he was conscious in the last minutes. Yesterday morning his parents flew to see him. They met. They even managed to communicate, as far as was possible in his condition. People are sometimes able to say more with their eyes than with their words.

We got together. In the evening his youngest children came to the hospital. The elders were there a few days ago when he was brought to the hospital. They study at different universities. And it's not close. The last few days we visited him every day. They understood that he was leaving. But they still hoped for a miracle. I think that parents are never prepared for the death of their son. And we are all not ready for this. Well, imagine: I saw Dima alive six hours ago, and suddenly he’s no longer there...

Two years ago, Dmitry announced that doctors discovered he had a brain tumor. It was a benign tumor...

No, the tumor was malignant from the very beginning. On willpower and modern treatment he held on. But, unfortunately, medications only help for a certain period of time, and then the disease wins.

He was seriously ill. That is, there was a certain stable state, after which deterioration occurred. And he remained in this state for some time. Then again - worsening, persists again, then worsening again. A week ago he could talk. And for the last five days I have been in the hospital in a department where people make it easier to end their lives. This is not a medical department, but palliative care. He could no longer speak - only with his eyes.

Now many people remember his Krasnoyarsk concert, which took place on June 2. They say that in the mood, in the atmosphere, it was felt that this was his farewell concert in Russia... Did Dmitry understand this?

"Goodbye!" - Dmitry Hvorostovsky said to the audience at his last concert. Already being seriously ill, the great baritone Dmitry Hvorostovsky gave a concert in his homeland in Krasnoyarsk

It was ours with him last performance. Then there was a concert on June 22 in Austria. He understood everything. He knew everything about his illness. He had no illusions. He is an incredibly courageous man. His death is a tragedy for all of us. There will never be a voice like Hvorostovsky’s.

- Where will the farewell take place?

For now, I can not say it. Florence is still in the hospital and completing the necessary paperwork.

55-year-old Dmitry Hvorostovsky fought brain cancer for two years, but, unfortunately, the disease turned out to be stronger. The sad news about the artist’s death was reported by Dmitry Malikov on his Twitter page. “Dmitry Hvorostovsky has died,” he wrote. Numerous fans, friends and colleagues mourn and express condolences to Dmitry’s family in in social networks. Now it’s hard to believe that a talented artist is no longer among us, because many until the last hoped that Hvorostovsky would win, cope, and pull through. ABOUT terrible diagnosis he found out two years ago. He didn’t keep silent, he told the fans everything as it is.

“Due to a progressing illness, I canceled one event, a second, a third, I didn’t want any rumors to spread, empty speculation began, and I declared everything as it is. This was a completely logical step on my part. Probably, the action is not very typical, but everyone chooses for themselves. It's easier for me to live this way. In any case, I would have to give comments later and explain something. Why not say it right away, thereby trying to close the topic? I’m not used to lying and misleading people,” the opera singer said in an interview with TASS as part of the “First Persons” project.

Having learned about the disease, Hvorostovsky underwent several examinations at leading clinics in Russia, America and England. Doctors prescribed the artist a long course of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. In the same interview, Dmitry said that the treatment was very difficult for him: his health was failing, his hair was falling out, he was weak. He has to, but he does not intend to give up.

There were periods when the illness subsided and Hvorostovsky happily went on stage. So, during the summer of this year, the audience greeted their favorite artist with deafening applause. After the singer could not find the strength to perform an encore, he burst into tears, and some spectators cried along with their idol. During the concert, Dmitry often put his hand to his heart, making it clear that this meeting was very dear to him.

“I thank you all for such an award, for your respect. My performances make me move on, move forward,” the artist admitted then. Little did he know then that this performance would be his last in his career.

All this time, Hvorostovsky’s family and friends were with him. His wife Florence supported her husband not only at home in London, but also on tour. She often published his photographs and touching posts on social networks wishing him strength and health. Opera diva Anna Netrebko, for example, performed at one of the concerts wearing a T-shirt with a portrait of Dmitry in his support. Even ex-wife, having forgotten past grievances, called the opera singer with wishes for a speedy recovery.

In the last few months. He canceled a concert in Moscow, scheduled for September 26, in order to continue treatment, but, unfortunately, the illness turned out to be stronger.

A few minutes ago, Dmitry Malikov announced the death of Dmitry Hvorostovsky on his Twitter page.

However, not everyone believed the veracity of the artist’s message: last month the media already reported about the death of the opera singer. Then the information was denied by Hvorostovsky’s director Mark Hildrew, and Dmitry’s wife wrote on Facebook that her “husband is fine and happily sleeping next to her.”

Update:

Joseph Kobzon just confirmed Malikov’s words. According to the artist, Hvorostovsky died in Europe at the age of 56.

Dmitry Malikov also managed to report that his account was not hacked.

I have information from my poetess Lilia Vinogradova, who was very close to him and who was there with him. She wrote to me that he died at 3:36 am London time,

— Malikov commented on his post to a RIA Novosti correspondent.

One of the latest sad news was confirmed by the artist’s representative in Russia. According to him, after long illness Dmitry Hvorostovsky died in London:
