But, it seems, it’s time to stop relying so far on this eternal tie. It's worth taking a closer look around. Everything changed a long time ago in the world. Now the drama is more strongly tied up by the desire to get an advantageous place, to shine and outshine, at all costs, the other, to avenge neglect, for ridicule. Isn’t it now more important to have electricity, money capital, and a profitable marriage than love?

First. This is all good; but in this regard, I still don’t see the plot in the play.

Second. Now I will not say whether the play has a plot or not. I will only say that in general they are looking for a private connection and do not want to see a general one. People have become innocently accustomed to these incessant lovers, without whose marriage the play cannot end. Of course, this is a plot, but what kind of plot? - an exact knot on the corner of the scarf. No, comedy should knit itself together, with its entire mass, into one big common knot. The plot should embrace all faces, not just one or two - touch what worries, more or less, all the actors. Every hero is here; the flow and progress of the play produces a shock to the entire machine: not a single wheel should remain as rusty and not included in the work.

First. But everyone can't be a hero; one or two must control the others.

Second. Not to manage at all, but perhaps to dominate. And in a car, some wheels move more noticeably and move more strongly; they can only be called the main ones; but the play is ruled by an idea, a thought: without it there is no unity in it. But anything can get stuck: horror itself, the fear of waiting, the threat of the law moving in the distance...

First. But this ends up giving comedy some more universal meaning.

Second. But isn’t this its direct and real meaning? Already at the very beginning, comedy was social, folk creation. At least, this is how her father, Aristophanes, showed her. Afterwards she entered the narrow gorge of a private plot, introduced a love affair, the same indispensable plot. But how weak this connection is among the most best comedians! how insignificant are these theatrical lovers with their cardboard love!

Second. I'm not saying she can't come in. But only love and all other feelings, more sublime, will only make a high impression when they are developed in all depth. In the hands of a skilled doctor and cold and hot water treats the same diseases with equal success: in the hands of talent, everything can serve as an instrument for the beautiful, if only it is guided by the lofty thought of serving the beautiful.

I confess that I felt joy, seeing how ridiculous the well-intentioned words were in the mouth of the rogue, and how hilariously funny the mask he put on became for everyone, from the chairs to the paradise. And after that there are people who say that there is no need to put this on stage! I heard one remark made, as it seemed to me, however, by a rather decent person: “What will the people say when they see that we have these kinds of abuses?”

In the hands of a skilled doctor, both cold and hot water treat the same diseases with equal success. In the hands of talent, everything can serve as an instrument for the beautiful, if only it is guided by the lofty thought of serving the beautiful.

Fourth (approaching). What can serve as something beautiful? and what are you talking about?

First. We started arguing about comedy. We're all talking about comedy in general, but no one has said anything about a new comedy yet. What do you say?

Fourth. But I’ll say this: you can see talent, observation of life, a lot of funny, true, taken from life; but in general there is something missing in the whole play. Somehow you don’t see either the beginning or the ending. It's strange that our comedians can't do without the government. Without him, not a single comedy will unfold.

This work, as you know, was written in connection with another work - the comedy “The Inspector General,” staged for the first time on April 19, 1836 at the Alexandrinsky Theater in St. Petersburg. What is striking is the similarity of the accusations that the interlocutors brought against the “School of Wives” and, accordingly, will be brought forward later against the “Inspector General”, who was not named in the “Theater Road Trip”: they say, this is an insult to decency, baseness of ridicule, a violation of the rules bequeathed by ancient authorities - Aristotle and Horace. On the other hand, the defense of the “School of Wives” - it is led mainly by Dorant and Urania - is built on the opposition of high laughter to clowning (cf. in Gogol - the opposition of laughter emanating “from the bright nature of man” to bilious or light laughter); is based on the affirmation of the aesthetic equivalence of comedy and tragedy; finally, on the priority of creativity over rules: “If I’m passionate,” says Urania, “I don’t ask myself<…>whether Aristotle’s rules allow me to laugh here or not.”

At the same time, against the background of Moliere’s tradition, the fundamental novelty of the construction of the “Theatrical Travel” is noticeable, which, it seems, did not attract the necessary attention.

What is “traveling”?

In connection with the 1831 production of Griboyedov’s “Woe from Wit,” a play well known to Gogol, one of the reviewers (N.I. Nadezhdin) noted that it struck “with intricate news - a traveling scene unprecedented in our theater” (see: Nadezhdin N.I. Literary criticism. Aesthetics. M., 1972. P. 283). Another critic, P.A., did not ignore the ending of “Woe from Wit.” Vyazemsky: “The appearance of a patrol in the entryway, this is the last action of a secular day<…>good and bold with its novelty. In the theater it is picturesque and very funny” ( Vyazemsky P.A. Aesthetics and literary criticism. M., 1984. P. 224). And now a curious episode of literary continuity emerges: Gogol applied this “news” to the theatrical performance as a whole, fixing it in the very title of the work (“traveling”) and preserving or modifying the corresponding stage attributes: in Griboedov’s “the front porch, the large staircase from the second housing” and so on; in Gogol - “the canopy of the theater”, “stairs leading to boxes and galleries” and so on. Both works, in the words of I.V. Kireevsky, said on a different occasion, “develop the consequences of a deed that has already been committed”: in the first case, evenings at Famusov’s and Chatsky’s behavior there; in the second - the premiere of the “new comedy”; Moreover, the situation of “departure” gives this development unprecedented drama.

Indeed: the setting of “Critics of the School for Wives” is Urania’s house in Paris, a kind of art salon where a recent performance in the Palais Royal is discussed. The opinions expressed here are spontaneous, living, but they still had at least some time to settle and take shape. In “Theatrical Traveling...” opinions are picked up literally on the fly, randomly, in a sharp and spontaneous collision with each other (a motif summarized in the finale, in the Author’s final monologue: “The world is like a whirlpool: opinions and rumors are forever moving in it...”) . If theater Hall, theater symbolizes unity, albeit temporary and sometimes apparent, when “a living, useful lesson is read to a whole crowd, a whole thousand people at a time” (Gogol’s words from the article “The St. Petersburg Stage in 1835–1836”), then “theatrical traveling” already marks the end of this unity and the fragmentation of interests, opinions and feelings. It thus fully corresponds to Gogol’s worldview in general: people are still “on the road and at the station, and not at home” (letter to A.O. Smirnova, dated January 27, 1846).

Following the “Critique of the “School of Wives””, as well as another Moliere “play about a play” - the “Versailles Impromptu” (“L"Impromptu de Versailles”, staged in 1663, the first Russian edition- 1881) - “Theatrical Travel...” demonstrates various judgments concerning the essence and nature of the comic, especially its modern manifestation. Many of these judgments are completely authentic, developing the theoretical content of such Gogol works as “Petersburg Notes...” and “P. Petersburg Stage...”. The resultant of these judgments is formed by the desire to “derive the laws of action from our own society” (a phrase from “The Petersburg Stage...”); hence the proclamation of a common plot and the search for new options for action, built not on a love affair, but on completely practical and selfish incentives - on the “electricity” of rank, money capital, a profitable marriage, on the desire to “get a profitable position” and so on. Gogol defined these incentives in consonance with his contemporary criticism of the mercantile and utilitarian mentality: the parallel between the provisions just given and the description of the “Iron Age” in “The Last Poet” (published 1835) by E.A. is so obvious. Baratynsky:

There is self-interest and a common dream in our hearts
From time to time, vital and useful
More clearly, more shamelessly busy.

In addition, Gogol also took into account the considerations expressed by V.P. Androsov as a reviewer of The Inspector General: “Depict for us not an excerpt from the lives of some people... but an excerpt from those morals that more or less make up features of the modern physiognomy of society” (Moscow Observer. 1836. May. Book 1. P. 123; our italics. - Yu.M.). However, at the same time, the theoretical orientation of Gogol’s play is distinguished by the radicalism of the formulations, brought to the program requirements regarding the structure of modern comedy, for example, in relation to the “general plot” already mentioned above, which should cover all the characters, from the main to the third-rate ones, and create a single comedic action.

Radicalism also marked Gogol’s solution to the question of the relationship between the traditions of modern and ancient (Novo-Attic) comedy. By that time, in Russian criticism there had already been a keen interest in Aristophanes as a representative of neo-Attic comedy, however, in “Theatrical Travel...” this interest took shape in a clear position: it was Aristophanes who created the example of comedy that modern comedians should follow: “At the very beginning, comedy was social, popular creation. At least, this is how her father, Aristophanes himself, showed her.”

Author on stage and behind the scenes

The theoretical orientation of the text, and on the other hand, the deliberate inconsistency and spontaneity of various reactions and judgments arising from the situation of “traveling,” created special difficulties in the dramatic organization of the work. How do you give unity to a play in which nothing actually happens?

One of the techniques of this organization is the end-to-end participation of the Author, who appears on stage four times (at the beginning, at the finale, and literally briefly, with one or two remarks, after the first few appearances). In this regard, the precedent for “Theatrical Travel...” could be not “Critique of “The School for Wives”,” where the author is absent, but “Versailles Impromptu,” where Moliere speaks under his own own name. Although in “Theatrical Traveling...”, according to Gogol’s setting, the Author appears “as an ideal person” and his name does not appear, references and associations to the real author are inevitable, especially since the text also provides biographical details for this.

For example, speaking about the resounding success of the premiere (“The whole theater is thundering!.. That’s the glory!”), which, by the way, fully corresponds to the actual success of the premiere of “The Inspector General,” the Author recalls his past: “God! How my heart seemed to beat seven or eight years ago, how everything in me shook!<…>It was a blessing for Providence that did not allow me to taste early delights and praises.” “Seven, eight” years ago, counting from the premiere of “The Inspector General,” they indicate for 1828- the time of Gogol’s arrival, captured by ambitious plans, in St. Petersburg, and for 1829- the time of the appearance of Hanz Küchelgarten, which did not allow Gogol to taste the much-desired fame... (The draft version of the play also contained another autobiographical detail - an indication of Gogol’s upcoming departure abroad, which actually took place a few months after the premiere of The Inspector General.) At the same time and the non-participation of the Author, hiding behind the scenes, does not cancel the effect of presence and forces everything that happens on stage to be correlated with his reaction (cf. the remark of one of the spectators, “not knowing” that the Author is nearby: “I confess, I would never I wanted to be in the place of the author...").

The dramatic organization of the play is also facilitated by such techniques as playing with contrasts, or coincidences, or shades, and the subject of this game is precisely opinions, starting with a kind of retardation at the beginning: The author is eager to hear “talk” about his play, but here come one after another two comme il faut, two officers, a socialite and so on, and “not a word about comedy”; then new faces appear - a middle-aged official, “two bekeshi” and so on, and a series of very approximate, random remarks follows (cf. the impressions of the annoyed Author: “Well, these haven’t said much yet”). Then the flow of opinions breaks through, as if through a dam, and a change of views and moods occurs within the same exit (there is no division into “phenomena” in the play), when, for example, the character is “Mr. V.” - changes his point of view and repents of what he said. Within the same exit, or scene, a plot movement is also outlined, but still associated with the movement of opinions (the story of “A Very Modestly Dressed Man” about his service in a provincial “town”, then an offer from a statesman for him to take a higher place , then refusing this offer - in a word, over the course of several lines, almost an entire stage of the hero’s life).

Returning to the figure of the Author of the play, we should note his unifying, dramatic function precisely in the sphere of development of judgments, that is, in the aspect of aesthetics and the theory of the comic. There are a lot of characters in the play that are close to the author’s views and worldview: the just mentioned “A very modestly dressed man”, “The second lover of the arts” (he wrote the words about “the electricity of rank”, about other modern stimuli of the plot, as well as about Aristophanes as a creator “social” comedy), “Young Lady” and others. And yet, in determining the moral orientation of laughter, the Author has the prerogative of the final word, dotting the i. Many people spoke about the benefits, meaning, and dignity of laughter, but no one said that laughter is a noble face, in later concepts, a positive hero. Wed. replica of the “Second Lady”: “Advise the author to bring out at least one honest person. Tell him that they are asking him to do this, that it will be really good.” It is to this “request” that the Author reacts in the final monologue: “...I’m sorry that no one noticed the honest face that was in my play<…>This honest, noble face was - laughter" and so on.

Another current opinion that provoked the author’s protest is about the comedian’s spiritual callousness: “I don’t say a word about the comedian not having nobility<…>I’m only saying that he couldn’t... shed a heartfelt tear, love something deeply, with all the depths of his soul,” says “The Second Lady.” Wed. Author’s response: “In the depths of cold laughter, hot sparks of eternal, powerful love can be found<…>He who often sheds heartfelt, deep tears seems to laugh more than anyone else in the world!..”

Specific gravity of remarks

But it turns out that stage directions can also perform a connecting, unifying function, when phrases flow freely from a character’s remark or monologue into a stage direction or the author’s designation of the character; we can therefore say that the proportion of stage directions in Gogol’s play increases immeasurably.

Thus, the phrase “unknown what kind of person” appears first in a dialogue between two officers (“And who is the other one with him?” - “I don’t know; unknown what kind of person”), and then becomes the hero’s calling card. The phrase “A very modestly dressed man” undergoes the same transformation. Sometimes a remark characterizing a character’s exit is then repeated in a truncated form when denoting it (for example, instead of “Young lady of great society...” simply “Young lady”) - this creates the impression of lively, free speech, where it is not necessary to repeat exactly the wording already found . There may be truncations when designating a character (at first: “Young official of an evasive nature,” then simply “Young official”). At times, a motley spectrum of designations and remarks unfolds, correlated with each other and fulfilling a characterological role (“Young official of an evasive nature”, “Official of a talkative nature”, “Voice of a gentleman of an encouraging nature”, “Voice of an angry official, but, apparently, experienced” , “Mr. is short and homely, but of a poisonous nature”, “Mr. of a positive nature”, “Mr. of a negative nature”, “Mr. of a good-natured nature”, “Mr. of a cold-blooded nature” and so on).

The interaction of notations and remarks-formulas serves as additional bonds connecting the text. At the same time, enriching the text and being certainly designed for reading, they turn “Theatrical Travel ...” into the only experience of drama for reading (Lesedrama) in Gogol’s dramaturgy and make it possible to understand why Gogol did not consider the work suitable for stage implementation. Subsequently, however, this prohibition was violated more than once... However, the stage history of the play is a separate topic that we will not dwell on.

“The hundred-headed monster called the public”

The very first critical responses highlighted the remarkable depth of “Theater Road Trip...”. Belinsky, who read the play in manuscript, spoke very briefly about it at first, in a letter to V. Botkin: “An amazing thing - I’ve never read anything smarter in Russian” ( Belinsky V.G. Full collection cit.: In 13 vol. M., 1956. T. 12. P. 117), and later, already in print, he dwelled in more detail on the originality of its genre: “... In this play, striking in its mastery of presentation, Gogol is as much a thinker - an esthetician who deeply comprehends the laws of art, which he serves with such glory as a poet and social writer. This play is like a magazine article in poetic-dramatic form - a feat possible for Gogol alone! This play contains a deeply conscious (so! - Yu.M.) theory social comedy and satisfactory answers to all questions, or, better said, to all attacks raised by The Inspector General and other works of the author” ( Belinsky. Decree. ed. T. 6. P. 663). This was said in connection with the appearance of the fourth volume of “The Works of Nikolai Gogol” (St. Petersburg, 1842), where “Theater Travel ...” first saw the light.

P.A. also pointed out the synthetic nature of the “Theatrical Traveling” genre. Pletnev: the play “contains all the treasures of drama, criticism, characterization and comedy. Everything shines with ideas of high observation, knowledge of passions and morals, bright colors and originality of considerations... The author attracts you, himself carried away by the flow of new images, positions and feelings...” ( Pletnev P.A. Writings and correspondence. St. Petersburg, 1885. T. 2. P. 373).

At the same time, another reviewer drew attention to the collective image of the public contained in the play. Let us take the liberty of giving an extensive quotation from this review, since it is not very well known even to specialists, and yet it is one of the most striking in the literature about the “Theater Road Trip...”.

“...The most precious pearl that Gogol’s Works brought us is undoubtedly “Departure from the theater after the presentation of a new comedy” (sic! - Yu.M.)…Many deep and beautiful truths are expressed here, warm love Every thought here is warmed towards humanity, every word responds with an extraordinary mind and knowledge of the heart. You read and don’t believe how the author could embrace so many minds, unravel so many hearts, enter one by one into the sphere of concepts, beliefs and habits of each of the many individuals who make up the so-called “public”. More than a hundred people pass in front of you in the “theatrical route”. One will throw out a thought, another will say nonsense, one will say only one word, another will utter a whole box, the third will not say anything himself, but will only say something else, the fourth will only blink his eyebrows - he gets angry, he praises, - he talks nonsense, not understanding the matter, one understands the matter, but speaks nonsense, one shouts about the beginning, so that there is love, one is dissatisfied, but laughs at the top of his lungs, the other is very pleased, but for some reason he is sad; in a word, every head, every hat, overcoat, every uniform, every coat thinks in its own way and speaks in its own way.
