What You'll Be Creating

The leaf is a wonderful symbol of nature and the changing seasons of the year. Some leaves have simple shapes that are very easy to draw; and some leaves have a very complex structure of the outer contour.

If you're wondering how to deal with these complex figures, then this lesson is designed just for you!

We'll look at four examples of natural delicacy: the maple leaf, the oak leaf, the fig leaf, and the quatrefoil.

What you will need

You will need the following tools to complete this tutorial:

  • graphite pencil HB
  • graphite pencil 3B
  • eraser
  • paper

1. Draw a Maple Leaf

Step 1

HB, draw the base line of the leaf and a slight extension for its petiole (leaf stem).

Select the top and bottom borders of the sheet.

Step 2

Draw six guide lines to recreate the veins of the leaf. The baseline is also the starting line for the central vein (central vein).

Step 3

To create a figure design maple leaf, we need to start with the frame.

Add two reference points on each side of the central vein. Next, create a shape that resembles a custom diamond; sides, which are connected by the base of the sheet, the upper central tip and the two upper side points of the figure.

Step 4

Create two more shapes in exactly the same way as we did in the previous step. The only difference is that the sides of the figures are connected to the central structure.

The sides of each figure are not equal, and this is done on purpose. The maple leaf has symmetrical features, but it always has some deviations or imperfections.

Step 5

Draw two more shapes, following the same logic.

Step 6

Add two trim elements at the bottom of the sheet. They complete the base of the frame.

Step 7

Draw the protrusions at the central part of the sheet, start with three...

... and then add two more protruding parts just below.

Don't be afraid to deviate from the original frame; This is our guide, not a hard limiter.

Step 8

Add five protrusions to the next segment.

Some protrusions are sharper and longer; variety is needed when we're talking about about drawing natural forms.

Step 9

Draw the protruding parts of the third segment.

Step 10

The next two segments are relatively small. They have four pronounced protrusions.

First, I processed the fourth segment, which is located on the left side.

Step 11

Step 12

I processed the lower shapes of the sheet, additional lower elements of the sheet. They usually have only one pronounced protruding part on each side (occasionally two are found).

Step 13

Delete all the construction lines, keeping only the outline of the maple leaf.

It's time to draw the pattern of secondary veins that branch off from the main veins along both sides. Start with the central vein, the central vein.

Some veins are longer and thicker; such veins are usually directed towards prominent bends.

Step 14

Add secondary veins to all major leaf veins.

Step 15

Add the tertiary veins, which branch from the secondary veins; these veins are barely noticeable.

Don't draw all the small elements; our task is to add only a subtle hint of detail.

Step 16

Let's make our drawing more realistic. Add shading to all sides of the sheet using a graphite pencil HB.

Also darken the areas between the main veins and the veins themselves. Next, I increased the thickness of the stem.

Step 17

Add more shading to make the sheet look more contrasting.

Step 18

I appreciated my drawing; it feels like it looks a little unnatural or maybe too perfect. To fix this, I added a pattern of half circles and dense strokes using graphic pencil 3B.

Now the drawing looks like it has fallen autumn leaf!

2. Draw an Oak Leaf

Step 1

Using a graphite pencil HB, draw a base line (this will be the starting line for the central vein of the leaf), highlight the borders of the leaf.

Step 2

Draw a jagged shape that resembles an egg. This shape will help us recreate the leaf design.

Step 3

Mark marks for the protruding parts of the sheet. Oak leaves usually have quite a bit of asymmetry, so feel free to get creative.

Step 4

Improve the central vein and also add secondary veins.

Step 5

Work on the top of the leaf, outline the stem, and also draw the first couple of protrusions.

Step 6

Draw three protruding parts on the left side. The protrusions often have slight curves that make the figures unique and even more attractive.

Step 7

Outline the three protrusions with right side leaf.

Step 8

Work on the bottom of the oak leaf by adding three rounded protrusions.

Step 9

Draw the pattern of the tertiary veins; these veins are light and relatively short.

Step 10

Using a graphite pencil HB, darken the veins, as well as the areas between the protruding parts.

Step 11

Our drawing is ready!

3. Draw a Fig Leaf

Step 1

Using a graphite pencil HB, draw the base line of the leaf, mark the boundaries, including the border between the stem and petiole.

Step 2

Improve the shape of the petiole. Also add the first segment of the leaf - it will have a unique shape.

Fig leaves are symmetrical, so we will first draw the left half of the leaf and then draw the other half on the right side.

Step 3

Draw the secondary veins and also outline the second segment of the leaf using a natural, uneven outline. This part of the sheet will be longer and larger than the first.

Note the cavity of the fig leaf; our task is to make it expressed.

Step 4

Draw the bottom of the fig leaf segment. The lower part closes at the pointed tip.

Step 5

Draw the second part of the leaf, trying to make this part as close to the existing part as possible. However, if you have any shortcomings, it will not ruin your work.

Step 6

Add a few more pairs of secondary veins.

Step 7

Draw the network of thin tertiary veins. This will add believability to the drawing.

Step 8

Fig leaves are relatively dark; their texture is soft and velvety. To create the illusion of this texture, I use soft strokes with a pencil 3B.

Start on one side of the sheet, shading the center and sides. The central vein and secondary veins of the fig leaf should remain light in color.

Step 9

I used 3B use a soft pencil to add strokes to the sides of the raised blades, creating the appearance of small folds.

Step 10

Continue adding soft graphite touches. Transitions of tones should be soft.

4. Draw a Clover Leaf

Step 1

In this part of the tutorial we will work on a beautiful symbol of good luck: the clover leaf. Sounds exciting, doesn't it?

Draw the center point of the shape and also add two diagonal lines highlighting the edges.

Step 2

Draw an element of the first leaf that resembles the shape of a tear...

And then add the remaining leaves. Some elements may overlap others.

Step 3

Improve the shape of the leaves by creating corner depressions. Shapes that now resemble hearts.

Step 4

Highlight the pattern on the leaves; this detail will make your drawing more interesting and realistic.

Step 5

Remove the borders of the pattern - we want the pattern to remain light and blurry. Next, add a network of thin veins, and also darken the core of each leaf.

Step 6

Add light shading to the leaves using a graphite pencil HB. To fill the space of the pattern, I used half circles.

Step 7

Darken the sheet with soft strokes using a graphite pencil 3B. To do this, you can use shading or random line strokes.

Step 8

Enhance the contrast even further by adding pencil strokes. 3B on the tips of the leaves, as well as emphasizing the shadows from neighboring leaves.

Our Drawings Are Completed

Congratulations - we have created ten beautiful pencil drawings! I hope you enjoyed the berries and also enjoyed the drawing process.

As a practice, I recommend that you try to get real leaves (or other objects) and create your own sketches. This will help you develop your observation skills and better understand the principles of shading with graphite pencils.

Let yours creative journey will be successful and full of joy!

Materials for work.
At the artist's workplace there may be various materials and equipment: paper, pencils, a knife for sharpening them, erasers, felt-tip pens, ink and pens, various paints etc. - depending on what task he has set for himself, what is best suited to solve it.

Paper. For drawing, different types of paper are used: rough or smoother, white or tinted. The choice is made depending on the nature of the work being performed and what result you want to achieve. For beginners, it is better to draw on durable white or bluish good quality paper. It will work on it good drawing. Images that will take a long time to work on should be done on Whatman paper. It is dense, durable, not loose, and can be easily abraded with an elastic band. Half-paper and drawing paper are also suitable for long-term work with pencil or paint. The side of the paper sheet on which the roughness is more noticeable is taken as the working surface.

For painting with watercolors, a torchon is best suited - a snow-white, dense, embossed
paper. This is expensive paper, so for sketches and color searches it is more advisable to use regular good Whatman paper. You can wash off unsuccessfully placed watercolors from it several times. For ordinary, ordinary work, you can also use whatman paper, having first checked the behavior of the paint on it. If the paint is strongly absorbed, leaves stains, goes on unevenly, if after washing the paint off the paper, marble spots remain on it, or even the top layer rolls off, such paper will not be suitable for watercolors.
