Evening prayer words. Prayers before bed. Blessed Virgin Mary, tenth

When going to bed, a believer needs to prepare for the coming night and the coming day. Prayers for the future (evening) - summing up the spiritual outcome of the day with the goal of strengthening a person to live according to the commandments, to avoid repeating mistakes and sins. Initially, this rule was written in Church Slavonic, but for convenience it was translated into a more understandable one. The following addresses are presented in Russian, with the correct stresses highlighted.

Church

You need to start like this:

Holy Spirit

Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, abiding everywhere and filling everything with Himself, Source of blessings and Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filth, and save, O Good One, our souls.

After the initial lines are read (before the Lord's Prayer), the mercy of Heaven is invoked, and the troparia must be read.

Lord's Prayer

Tropari

Reading these words 12 times in the morning and evening symbolically signifies the sanctification of every hour of the day.

Three evening hymns are performed, directed to each of the Persons of the Holy Trinity.

Texts of prayers

In an appeal to God the Father, the Monk Macarius the Great (IV century) teaches people to pray to the King of Heaven that the Almighty would forgive the sins that were committed during the past day, so that the Lord would help people spend the night and enter the coming day in a state of humility and reverence.

Saint Macarius the Great, to God the Father, first

The second petition to God the Son was compiled by the Monk Antiochus, a Syrian ascetic of the 5th century - an experience of comprehending the perfection of the Creator as the Good Shepherd. Here the deep sinfulness of human nature is realized (“ there is a seed of aphids in me") and expresses the hope that the soul will be saved. Here we ask for enlightenment of the mind and heart with the purity of the Divine Word, soul, body, and the fearlessness of Christ. In conclusion, “humility of thought” is asked.

Saint Antiochus, to our Lord Jesus Christ, second

The meaning of the third psalm - to God the Holy Spirit - is approximately this: during the passing day, mortals committed many sins, which gave rise to despondency, and I lost peace in my soul. Here he asks for mercy so that people’s consciences are clear and they can glorify the name of the Creator.

St. Ephraim the Syrian to the Holy Spirit, third

A person’s readiness to appear before the Almighty tomorrow is expressed in the following four chants (from 4 to 7). The fourth was created by Macarius the Great, and the fifth by the great teacher of the church, St. John Chrysostom (347-407).

The latter is especially interesting because it contains 24 petitions - the number of hours in a day. Orthodox Christians ask the Creator for many mercies in order to do good in life, good dreams in which there are no nightmares and bad thoughts, and in the morning to be heard that they have repented, to become firmer in a good thought, so that the will of the Almighty is accomplished in sinful people.

Macarius the Great, fourth

Fifth

Sixth

John Chrysostom, seventh

(24 requests according to the number of hours in a day)

In the eighth, intercession for the people before the Lord is asked from the Mother of God, the Angels and the union of revered sages. Everyone strives to imitate their holiness and ability to be humble. Man’s hope in mercy is strengthened by the words of the Creator himself that He does not want the sinner to die, but wants the sinner to take the right path and remain alive.

To our Lord Jesus Christ, eighth

The ninth petition (of St. Peter of Studium, VIII-IX centuries) and the tenth, which are addressed to the Virgin Mary, for Her prayers help people “to love the law of God” and strengthen their will, so that everyone lives “in the commandment of Her Son” and can get into the Kingdom Heavenly.

Peter of Studite, ninth

Blessed Virgin Mary, tenth

Good Mother of the King, Most Pure and Blessed Mother of God Mary, pour out the mercy of Thy Son and our God on my passionate soul and with Thy prayers instruct me in good deeds, so that I may pass through the rest of my life without blemish and through Thee I will find paradise, O Virgin Mother of God, the only Pure One and Blessed One.

The eleventh petition addressed to the Guardian Angel calls for protection of the soul and body, protection from the crafty attacks of the devil; the need for purified repentance of the heart to no longer offend the Almighty with a single sin is expressed.

Holy Guardian Angel, eleventh

Next, a beautiful hymn of gratitude to the Virgin Mary is read - Kontakion “To the Chosen Voivode...”. This chant was composed by Patriarch Sergius of Constantinople in connection with the miraculous defense of the Orthodox Byzantine Empire from the invasion of the Persians and Avars in 626. The inspirational hymn “To the Mounted Voivode...” was included in the Akathist that already existed at that time Mother of God.

The end of the evening prayer is preceded by the reading of a short liturgy of St. Ioannikis the Great (9th century). He spent seventy years of his almost hundred years of existence in monastic deeds, knew the Psalter by heart, read the psalms, adding to each hymn this small but touching verse: “My hope is the Father...”

St. Ioannikios

However, the evening canon itself does not end there.

The doxology of the Most Holy John of Damascus (VIII-IX centuries) reminds us that the bed of night rest can unexpectedly turn out to be a coffin for us, and therefore everyone must strengthen repentance. The danger of spiritual death is great, people constantly walk “in the midst of many snares,” from which only the grace and mercy of the Almighty can save them, so it is worth resorting to His ineffable mercy.

Saint John of Damascus

Then, having baptized himself (some prayer books indicate that you need to cross your bed, as well as around the four cardinal directions), the Orthodox Christian turns to the Honorable Cross of the Lord. This is how our faith in his power, the power of the sign of the cross is expressed, demons are driven away.

Turning to the Cross of the Lord, we call it Life-Giving, for the Cross is an incomprehensible and invincible power: Jesus Christ was killed on it as on an altar in propitiation for our sins and thereby helped people get rid of eternal death, opened the way to Heaven for them. There is also short version this psalm.

Or short:

Protect me, Lord, by the power of Your Honest and Life-giving Cross, and save me from all evil.

The short doxology “Loosen, leave...” is associated with a request for everyone and for everything. Following the call of the Savior and his devotees, who fervently prayed for their enemies, a Christian turns to the Almighty with prayers for those who hate us and have ever offended us, praying further for their relatives and good friends, for the sick and traveling, for benefactors, for have already left the earthly world...

Relax, let go, forgive, O God, our sins, voluntary and involuntary, committed in word and deed, consciously and unconsciously, day and night, in mind and in thought - forgive us all, as the Merciful and Humane One.

Falling asleep, a Christian thinks that everyone will someday have to give an answer for the deeds in life at the Judgment of God, and performs the confessional liturgy to the Heavenly King. Some sins that are common to many people to one degree or another are listed, and sincere repentance is offered.

Everything ends with going to bed: the prayer book instructs to say a short prayer, transferring everyone’s soul “into the hands of the Creator” - to His Will.

Short

In Your hand, Lord Jesus Christ, my God, I commend my spirit: You bless me, You have mercy on me and grant me eternal life. Amen

The above services in the union give very strong defense, clear thoughts, resist nightmares. Try to use full version prayer word for the night.

Prayer rule of St. Seraphim of Sarov

A modern person, surrounded by bustle, work and worries, does not often manage to devote proper time to his evening or morning routine. Realizing this, the Venerable Seraphim of Sarov (1757-1833), who lived not so long ago relative to the main revered saints and observed the lives of people from different classes, compiled a canon for us, which is more accessible, in a short version.

A short version of the evening rule is:

  • Lord's Prayer (read three times)
  • Songs Holy Virgin Mary (read three times)
  • Symbol of Faith (read once)

These psalms to the Creator are the basic principles of faith and humility for every Orthodox Christian. Also during the day you need to mentally, as an option, quietly, barely audibly read the Lord’s Prayer. A short version of it is also possible - “Lord, have mercy.” After mass and before you get ready to go to bed, Seraphim of Sarov recommends turning to the Ever-Virgin, repeating the words “Most Holy Theotokos, save me” as much as possible.

Compliance with the canons of the evening liturgy will help both adults and children find a restful sleep.

After a hard day or being stressed for a long time, people often have nightmares and bad dreams. This indicates an overload of the body, its tense state, and worries. They say that so that what you see does not come true, when you wake up, you need to quickly tell someone everything that you dreamed. At the same time, try to remember as many details as possible. And in the evening of the same day, during prayers for bedtime, read a service to the Creator, which will protect against nightmares.

From nightmares

In addition to the above methods of getting rid of nightmares, you can use a conspiracy or a special ritual.

It is important to remember that you should not mention intentions anywhere. After all main strength conspiracy - faith.

When you wake up at night from a nightmare, you need to say three times

“Where there is night, there comes sleep. Amen".

Place the sign of the cross on yourself three times. If it's summer, you can say these words in open window or a window. Water washes away negativity - take a sip of water. It is also necessary to change the position in which you sleep, for example, if you slept on your back, lie on your side, etc. It will be useful to change the bed linen or at least change the clothes on the wrong side.

Water cleanses. When you wake up, tell the bad vision to the water: in the shower or by opening the tap. Then say the text:

“Water, wash away all sorrows and troubles”, “Where water goes, there goes sleep.”

Making a dream catcher

This is a very powerful ritual object, it appeared among the ancient Indians. In addition, this amulet will help “neutralize” bad dreams and bring positive changes to life. Now you can buy a similar trinket in stores, but it’s better to make it yourself, and invest only good thoughts.

Optina Elders

Useful tips from clergy:

  • The singing of the Optina elders has a beneficial effect on us when listening. This monastery famous for its wise elders who foresee the fate of a person. When we listen to their chants, we tune in to the true path, become humble and submissive to our fate.
  • The Orthodox Church does not prohibit viewing videos with church content. But you should take this kind of information very seriously and morally. While you are watching or listening to something like this, you should concentrate as much as possible on what is being voiced and put other things aside.
  • Priests recommend reading the prayers of the Optina elders in evening time. They are many centuries old, therefore they carry wisdom that can explain the foundations of Orthodoxy and the need for faith in God.

Listen on video

I have done the same things all the days of my life- which I have created throughout my life.
Secret eating- intemperance from food during fasting, eating in secret from others.
Neglect- carelessness (in the matter of salvation).
By untruthfulness- lies.
nasty profitability- criminal gain (profit).
Mshelomystvom- bribery, greed (mshel - self-interest).
Jealousy- jealousy, suspicion (mistrust).
Memory malice- rancor.
Extortion- greed, love of money. In our tradition, enshrined in the Catechism, this word has become the name for all kinds of unrighteous fleecing of neighbors: bribes, extortion, etc.
Feelings- feelings.
Sins- sins.
Mental and physical together- both mental and physical.
Image for You- with whom You.
Prognevakh- angered.
Untruthful- I slandered; caused every kind of evil and injustice.
Vinna I present to you my God- I, guilty of all this, stand before You, my God.
I have the will to repent- I have a desire to repent.
Tochiyu- only.
Having passed on sins- my former (past) sins.
From all these, even words- from all this that I expressed.

The need for daily repentance for sins committed throughout your life is explained by the words of St. Anthony the Great: “Say that you are sinners, and mourn everything that you have done in a state of negligence. For this, the favor of the Lord will be with you and will work in you: for He is good and forgives the sins of all who turn to Him, no matter who they are, so that He will not remember them again. However, He wants those who have been pardoned to remember the forgiveness of their sins that they have committed so far, so that, having forgotten about it, they will not allow anything to happen. their behavior in such a way that they will be forced to give an account of those sins that have already been forgiven them..."
While maintaining and constantly renewing repentance for the sins of our lives, without forgetting about them, we must not at the same time “turn them over in our minds,” relive them, and cling to them in memory. This is one of the manifestations of the art of “invisible warfare,” the middle “royal” path that a Christian should follow.
This prayer helps to consider daily sins and supports the memory of those committed earlier - in all days of life. Let us remember that sins sincerely confessed in the Sacrament of Repentance are completely forgiven by the Lord, but this does not mean that we should forget about them. Sins remain in memory for humility and contrition for what they have done.
Both at confession in the Sacrament of Penance, and at daily confession to God, one must confess one’s sins separately, consciously. Therefore, let us dwell on the sins named in the prayer and indicate what deeds, actions, words and thoughts they may mean. In doing so, we are guided by the Orthodox Catechism and the instructions of the ascetics of the Orthodox Church.
Binge eating, drunkenness, secret eating- sins associated with the passion of gluttony, which is one of the eight main passions. Secret eating- eating food secretly (out of greed, shame or unwillingness to share, when fasting is broken, when eating illegal food, etc.). The sins of gluttony also include polyeating And guttural rage- a passion for enjoying the sensations of taste, that is, gourmetism, which is so instilled in our days. Drug use And smoking also relate to the area of drunkenness; If you have suffered or are suffering from these sinful addictions, include them in the list of sins.
Celebration. Let us recall the formidable word of the Lord Himself: But I tell you that for every idle word that people speak, they will give an answer on the day of judgment: for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.(Matt. 12:36-37).
But here is the patristic recipe for how to behave if the situation and conversations in the company are conducive to idle talk: “If you do not have a special need to stay, then leave; and when there is a need to stay, then turn your mind to prayer, without condemning those who talk idle, but recognizing your weakness ". ( Venerable John the Prophet)
St. Ephraim the Syrian expands the concept of idle talk: “And what is an idle word? A promise of faith that is not fulfilled in practice. A person believes and confesses Christ, but remains idle, does not do what Christ commanded. And in another case, the word is idle - namely, when a person confesses and does not correct himself, when he says that he repents and sins again, and a bad review of another is an idle word, because he retells what was not done and what he does not see.”
Dejection. This sin is often directly related to idle talk:
“Despondency is often one of the branches, one of the first offspring of verbosity... Dejection is a relaxation of the soul, exhaustion of the mind... it deceives God, as if He is unmerciful and unloving of mankind; in psalmody it is weak, in prayer it is weak... in obedience it is hypocritical.” . ( Venerable John Climacus)
Laziness, as we see, is closely connected with the passion of despondency. The Orthodox Catechism lists “laziness in relation to the teaching of piety, prayer and public worship” among the sins against the 1st commandment of the Law of God.
Pre-controversy. “Bind your tongue, which frantically strives to argue, and fight this tormentor seventy times seven times a day,” teach the holy fathers in the words of John Climacus. “Whoever in a conversation stubbornly wants to insist on his opinion, even if it is fair, let him know that he is possessed by a devilish illness; and if he does this in a conversation with equals, then perhaps the reproof of his elders will heal him; if If he treats his greatest and wisest in this way, then this illness from people is incurable.”
Disobedience. “He who disobeys in word, without a doubt, does not obey in deed, for whoever is unfaithful in word is unyielding in deed,” - this is how St. John Climacus connects disobedience with contradiction. In the Church everything is built on obedience; We must obey each and everyone whom the Lord has placed over us. Complete obedience in matters of spiritual life is necessary in relation to the spiritual father, in general to shepherds and spiritual teachers. But complete and unquestioning obedience (in everything that does not contradict faith and the Law of God) must be shown by the wife to her husband, and children who have not yet created their own family - to their parents. Obey your superiors.
Slander- direct violation of the 9th commandment of the Law of God ( Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.- Ref. 20.16). Any slander, any gossip and gossip, any unfair reproach is slander. Condemning your neighbor, which is directly forbidden by the Lord, almost certainly leads to slander: Judge not lest ye be judged(Matt. 7:1).
Neglect- careless fulfillment of the duties assigned to us by God or even neglect of them. Neglect at work, neglect of your home and family responsibilities, neglect of prayer...
Self-love Abba Dorotheos calls him the root of all passions, and St. Ephraim the Syrian the mother of all evil.
“Pride is a passionate and reckless love of the body. Its opposites are love and abstinence. It is obvious that he who has self-love has all the passions.” ( Saint Maximus the Confessor)
Multi-acquisitiveness. Covetousness...is idolatry, says the Apostle Paul (Col. 3:5). Covetousness is the passion of love of money, one of the eight main passions in action: any accumulation, addiction to various objects, stinginess and, conversely, wastefulness.
Theft. This concept includes not only any theft, but also any use of something that is “badly lying”: for example, “reading out” a book in the library or from friends. A particularly serious type of theft is sacrilege - “the appropriation of what is dedicated to God and what belongs to the Church” (see “Orthodox Catechism”), that is, not only the direct theft of sacred objects, but also: taking, without asking the blessing of the priest, donated on the eve or brought to the temple by benefactors for distribution, etc.
Untruthfulness- any lie in words. Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who speak the truth are pleasing to Him.(Prov. 12:22).
We must remember that there is no “innocent” lie, every lie is not from God. “A lie, in which there is no intention to harm one’s neighbor, is impermissible, because it does not agree with love and respect for one’s neighbor and is not worthy of a person, and especially of a Christian created for truth and love,” says St. Philaret in his “Orthodox Catechism.”
Nasty profitability- making a profit, profit in a nasty, unjust way. The concept can include any weight, measurement, deception, but also any income that brings evil to people - for example, based on satisfying or inciting sinful passions. Forgery of any documents and the use of counterfeit documents (for example, travel tickets), buying stolen goods on the cheap is also bad profit. This also includes parasitism, “when they receive a salary for a position or payment for a task, but do not perform the position or task and, thus, steal both the salary or payment, and the benefit that their work could bring to society or to the one for whom they should have worked.” " (see "Orthodox Catechism").
Mshelomystvo- greed, collection mshela- self-interest. This includes all types of extortion and bribery. And, since this sin is included in the prayer of repentance for all Orthodox Christians, you should carefully examine your life and discover its manifestations in it.
Jealousy- jealousy of all kinds.
Envy.“Whoever envies his neighbor rebels against God, the giver of gifts.” ( Saint John Chrysostom)
"...Envy and rivalry are a terrible poison: they give birth to slander, hatred and murder." ( Venerable Ephraim the Syrian)
Anger- one of the eight main passions.
“From whatever reason the movement of anger flares up, it blinds the eyes of the heart and, putting a veil on the sharpness of mental vision, does not allow one to see the Sun of truth. It doesn’t matter whether a sheet of gold, or lead, or some other metal is placed on the eyes - value metals make no difference in glare." ( Venerable John Cassian the Roman)
Memory malice“there is the final limit of anger, the storage in memory of the sins of our neighbor against us, the aversion of the image of justification (determined by God: “forgive and you will be forgiven” - cf. Luke 6:37), the destruction of all previous virtues, a soul-destroying poison, a heart-gnawing worm, shame to pray (how do you say: “leave it, as we do ..."?), a nail driven into the soul, incessant sin, constant lawlessness, hourly evil.” ( Venerable John Climacus)
“If you have a grudge against someone, pray for him; and, by prayer, separating sadness from the memory of the evil that he caused you, you will stop the movement of passion; by becoming friendly and humane, you will completely drive passion out of the soul.” ( Saint Maximus the Confessor)
Hatred. He who hates his brother is in darkness, and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.(1 John 2:11). Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him(1 John 3:15). He who says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, is a liar: for he does not loving brother his own, whom he sees, how can he love God, whom he does not see?(1 John 4:20).
Extortion- “when, under the guise of some right, but in fact in violation of justice and philanthropy, they turn to their advantage someone else’s property or someone else’s labor, or even the very misfortunes of their neighbors, for example, when lenders burden debtors with interest (loan interest), when owners exhaust dependents from them with unnecessary taxes or work, if during a famine they sell bread at too much high price"(See "Orthodox Catechism"). In in a broad sense word extortion generally means covetousness, greed (passion of love of money); in this meaning the word is used in the New Testament (Rom. 1:29; 2 Cor. 9:5; Eph. 4:19 and 5:3; Col. 3:5).
Serious sins committed during life, from among those that are not directly named in this prayer, should be included in it, and not “subsumed” under one of the points (for example, blasphemy, murmuring against God, or attempted suicide, or the murder of the unborn children - abortion, etc.). In particular, this list does not include sins related to the passion of fornication (and among them are such as adultery and any extramarital cohabitation, and all violations of purity and chastity), and to the passion of pride, which is rightfully considered the most terrible of passions.

Prayers for bedtime or Evening prayers are the final part of the regular prayer rule of an Orthodox Christian - prayers read daily in the evening.

Why do you need to read bedtime prayers for the future?

Probably every believer asked himself the question: should I pray before going to bed? It would seem that I read morning prayers, lived the day without shocks and okay. Why also read evening prayers, after which there is only sleep and nothing more.

If this question comes to you, then read the following words St. Ignatius Brianchaninov: “A brief tranquility of sleep during the night is an image of a long sleep in the darkness of the grave. And they remind us of our sleep prayers for our future migration into eternity, they review all our activities during the day, they teach us to bring God confession of our sins and repentance for them.” Even two short lines are enough to understand: the importance of evening prayers is very great and should under no circumstances be omitted.

It is customary for them to thank the Lord for the day they have lived and confess for their sins. Together with morning prayers and prayers throughout the day, evening prayers serve as food for the soul, which, like our body, needs constant care. As the Monk Abba Isaiah wrote: “Do not abandon the rule of prayer, lest you fall into the hands of your enemies. Follow your prayer rule carefully. Beware! do not allow yourself to neglect it. By carefully following the rule, the soul is enlightened and strengthened.”

Evening prayer rule

The evening prayer rule can be complete or short. The first is intended for monks as well as spiritually experienced laymen and is published in " Orthodox prayer book" It requires knowing all the prayers by heart and a special mental attitude, so for people just starting the practice of reading evening prayers, it is quite difficult: it is better for them to first read the short rule.

There are two options for a short prayer rule.

The first option includes reading such prayers as “Heavenly King”, Trisagion, “Our Father”, “Have mercy on us, Lord”, “Eternal God”, “Good King”, “Angel of Christ”, from “Chosen Governor” to “Worthy is” and is intended for those rare cases when it is difficult for a believer, either due to physical or spiritual weakness, or due to other reasons (for example, in the case of especially responsible watches and duties, guard duty, active combat operations), to read the full rule.

The second option, also a prayer rule St. Seraphim Sarovsky, involves reading “Our Father” and “Virgin Mother of God” three times a day, and “Creed” once. It is not recommended for regular reading; intended only for those exceptional days and circumstances when a person is extremely tired or very limited in time.

It is undesirable to completely omit the reading of evening prayers, as well as to read them without due attention, “formally”. It is better to read selectively only a part of them, but sincerely and with diligence, than to quickly jabber and throw yourself into bed: there will definitely be no benefit from such “reading”. If in doubt, you should contact your confessor; it is extremely undesirable to rewrite the evening prayer rule yourself.

Read prayers for the coming sleep

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.

Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of truth, Who is everywhere and fulfills everything, Treasure of good things and Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filth, and save, O Good One, our souls.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Thrice)

Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; Lord, cleanse our sins; Master, forgive our iniquities; Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name's sake.

Lord have mercy. (Thrice)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

Our Father, who art in heaven! Hallowed be your name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as it is in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, just as we forgive our debtors; and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Troparions of repentance, tone 6

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us; Perplexed by any answer, we offer this prayer to You as the Master of sin: have mercy on us.

Lord, have mercy on us, for we trust in You; Do not be angry with us, do not remember our iniquities, but look upon us now as if you are gracious, and deliver us from our enemies; For Thou art our God, and we are Thy people; all works are done by Thy hand, and we call upon Thy name.

And now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Open the doors of mercy to us, blessed Mother of God, who trust in You, so that we may not perish, but may we be delivered from troubles by You: for You are the salvation of the Christian race.

Lord have mercy. (12 times)

Prayer 1, St. Macarius the Great, to God the Father

Eternal God and King of every creature, who has made me worthy even at this hour, forgive me the sins I have committed this day in deed, word and thought, and cleanse, O Lord, my humble soul from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit. And grant me, Lord, to pass through this dream in peace at night, so that, rising from my humble bed, I will please Your most holy name all the days of my life, and will trample the fleshly and incorporeal enemies that fight me. And deliver me, Lord, from vain thoughts that defile me, and from evil lusts. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 2, Saint Antiochus, to our Lord Jesus Christ

To the Almighty, the Word of the Father, who is perfect himself, Jesus Christ, for the sake of Thy mercy, never leave me, Thy servant, but always rest in me. Jesus, good Shepherd of Your sheep, do not betray me to the sedition of the serpent, and do not leave me to the desires of Satan, for the seed of aphids is in me. Thou, O Lord God, worshiped, the Holy King, Jesus Christ, preserve me as I sleep with unflickering light, Thy Holy Spirit, with whom Thou didst sanctify Thy disciples. Grant, O Lord, to me, Thy unworthy servant, Thy salvation on my bed: enlighten my mind with the light of reason of Thy Holy Gospel, my soul with the love of Thy Cross, my heart with the purity of Thy word, my body with Thy passionless passion, preserve my thought with Thy humility, and uplift I am in time like Your praise. For Thou art glorified with Thy Beginningless Father and with the Most Holy Spirit forever. Amen.

Prayer 3, to the Holy Spirit

Lord, Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of truth, have mercy and have mercy on me, Thy sinful servant, and forgive me the unworthy, and forgive me all that I have sinned today as a man, and moreover, not as a man, but also worse than cattle, my free sins and involuntary, driven and unknown: even evil from youth and science, and even from insolence and despondency. If I swear by Your name, or blaspheme in my thoughts; or whom I will reproach; or slandered someone with my anger, or saddened someone, or became angry about something; either he lied, or he slept in vain, or he came to me as a beggar and despised him; or made my brother sad, or married, or whom I condemned; or became proud, or became proud, or became angry; or standing in prayer, my mind is moved by the wickedness of this world, or I think about corruption; either overeated, or drunk, or laughing madly; either I thought evil, or saw someone else’s kindness, and my heart was wounded by it; or dissimilar verbs, or laughed at my brother’s sin, but mine are countless sins; Either I didn’t pray for the sake of it, or I did something else that was evil, I don’t remember, because I did more and more of these things. Have mercy on me, my Creator Master, Thy sad and unworthy servant, and leave me, and let me go, and forgive me, for I am Good and Lover of Mankind, so that I may lie down in peace, sleep and rest, the prodigal, sinful and damned one, and I will bow and sing , and I will glorify Your most honorable name, with the Father and His Only Begotten Son, now and ever and forever. Amen.

Prayer 4, Saint Macarius the Great

What will I bring to Thee, or what will I repay to Thee, O most gifted Immortal King, generous and philanthropic Lord, since I was lazy to please You, and did nothing good, You brought to the end of this past day the conversion and salvation of my soul? Be merciful to me, a sinner and naked of every good deed, raise up my fallen soul, defiled in immeasurable sins, and take away from me all the evil thoughts of this visible life. Forgive my sins, O One Sinless One, even those who have sinned this day, in knowledge and ignorance, in word, and deed, and thought, and with all my feelings. You Yourself, covering me, save me from every opposing situation with Your Divine power, and ineffable love for mankind, and strength. Cleanse, O God, cleanse the multitude of my sins. Deign, Lord, to deliver me from the snare of the evil one, and save my passionate soul, and overshadow me with the light of Your face, when You come in glory, and now make me sleep without condemnation, and keep the thoughts of Your servant without dreaming, and untroubled, and all the work of Satan take me away from me, and enlighten the intelligent eyes of my heart, so that I may not sleep into death. And send me an Angel of peace, guardian and mentor of my soul and body, that he may deliver me from my enemies; Yes, rising from my bed, I will bring you prayers of gratitude. Yes, Lord, hear me, your sinful and wretched servant, with your will and conscience; grant that I have risen to learn from Thy words, and the despondency of demons is driven away from me, to be made by Thy Angels; may I bless Your holy name, and glorify, and glorify the Most Pure Mother of God Mary, Who hast given us sinners intercession, and accept this one praying for us; We see that He imitates Your love for mankind, and never ceases to pray. To her, my Lord and Creator, do not want the death of a sinner, but as if he were converted and live, grant me conversion, the accursed and unworthy; take me away from the mouth of the destructive serpent, who yawns to devour me and bring me to hell alive. To her, my Lord, is my consolation, Who for the sake of the accursed one has clothed himself in corruptible flesh, pluck me from accursedness, and grant consolation to my more accursed soul. Plant in my heart to do Thy commandments, and forsake evil deeds, and receive Thy blessedness: for in Thee, O Lord, have I trusted, save me.

Prayer 9, to the Most Holy Theotokos, Peter of Studium

To Thee, O Most Pure Mother of God, I fall down and pray: Consider, O Queen, how I continually sin and anger Thy Son and my God, and many times when I repent, I find myself lying before God, and I repent in trembling: will the Lord strike me down, and hour by hour I do the same again? ; I pray to this leader, my Lady, Lady Theotokos, to have mercy, strengthen me, and give me good works. Behold, my Lady Theotokos, for the Imam is by no means in hatred of my evil deeds, and with all my thoughts I love the law of my God; But we do not know, Most Pure Lady, from where I hate, I love, but I transgress what is good. Do not allow, O Most Pure One, my will to be fulfilled, for it is not pleasing, but let the will of Thy Son and my God be done: may He save me, and enlighten me, and give me the grace of the Holy Spirit, so that I may cease from here from filthiness, and so on may I live as commanded Thy Son, to Him belongs all glory, honor and power, with His Originless Father, and His Most Holy and Good and Life-Giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 10, to the Most Holy Theotokos

Good Mother of the King, Most Pure and Blessed Mother of God Mary, pour out the mercy of Thy Son and our God on my passionate soul and with Thy prayers instruct me in good deeds, so that I may pass through the rest of my life without blemish and through Thee I will find paradise, O Virgin Mother of God, the only Pure One and Blessed One.

Amen.

Kontakion to the Mother of God

To the chosen Voivode, victorious, as having been delivered from the evil ones, let us write thanks to Thy servants, the Mother of God, but as having an invincible power, free us from all troubles, let us call Ti; Rejoice, Unbrided Bride.

Glorious Ever-Virgin, Mother of Christ God, bring our prayer to Your Son and our God, may You save our souls.

Virgin Mary, do not despise me, a sinner, who requires Your help and Your intercession, for my soul trusts in You, and have mercy on me.

Prayer of Saint Ioannikios

My hope is the Father, my refuge is the Son, my protection is the Holy Spirit: Holy Trinity, glory to Thee.

It is worthy to eat as you truly bless Thee, the Mother of God, the Ever-Blessed and Most Immaculate and the Mother of our God. We magnify You, the most honorable Cherub and the most glorious without comparison Seraphim, who gave birth to God the Word without corruption.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Lord have mercy. (Thrice)

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prayers for the sake of Thy Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers and all saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

Prayer of Saint John of Damascus

Lord, Lover of Mankind, will this coffin really be my bed, or will you still enlighten my damned soul during the day? For seven the grave lies ahead, for seven the death awaits. I fear Your judgment, O Lord, and endless torment, but I do not stop doing evil: I always anger You, the Lord my God, and Your Most Pure Mother, and all the Heavenly powers, and my holy Guardian Angel. We know, Lord, that I am unworthy of Your love for mankind, but I am worthy of all condemnation and torment. But, Lord, whether I want it or not, save me. Even if you save a righteous man, nothing great; and even if you have mercy on a pure person, nothing is marvelous: you are worthy of the essence of Your mercy. But surprise me, a sinner, with Your mercy: for this, show Your love for mankind, so that my malice will not overcome Your unspeakable goodness and mercy: and as you wish, arrange a thing for me.

Troparion, tone 2

Enlighten my eyes, O Christ God, so that not when I fall asleep into death, and not when my enemy says: “Let us be strong against him.”

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Be the protector of my soul, O God, as I walk in the midst of many snares; deliver me from them and save me, O Blessed One, as a Lover of Mankind.

And now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Let us ceaselessly sing with our hearts and lips the Glorious Mother of God and the Most Holy Angel, confessing this Mother of God as truly having given birth to God incarnate for us, and praying unceasingly for our souls.

Mark yourself with a cross and say a prayer to the Honest Cross:

May God rise again, and may His enemies be scattered, and may those who hate Him flee from His presence. As smoke disappears, let them disappear; just as wax melts in the face of fire, so let demons perish in the face of those who love God and sign the sign of the cross, and say in joy: Rejoice, Most Honorable One and Life-giving Cross Lord, drive away the demons by the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, who descended into hell and trampled upon the power of the devil, and gave us His Honest Cross to drive away every adversary. O Most Honest and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord! Help me with the Holy Virgin Mary and with all the saints forever. Amen.

Or briefly:

Protect me, Lord, by the power of Your Honest and Life-giving Cross, and save me from all evil.

Remember, Lord, those who bear fruit and do good in Your holy churches, and give them petitions for salvation and eternal life. Remember, Lord, us, humble and sinful and unworthy Thy servants, and enlighten our minds with the light of Thy mind, and guide us on the path of Thy commandments, through the prayers of our Most Pure Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary and all Thy saints: for blessed art thou unto the ages of ages. . Listen to evening prayers

A variety of situations happen in life and sometimes there is no time left to read the evening prayer rule, even a short one. In such cases, instead of reading personal evening prayers, it is permissible to listen to them recorded.

If you sometimes don’t have an Internet connection, then download the recording to your phone or player so that you always have it at hand.

Download evening prayers performed by Abbot Flavian (Matveev). Recording duration is 29:43.

The formation of the evening prayer rule

In the form we know, the evening prayer rule was formed quite late: apparently only in the 18th century, as evidenced by Feofan Govorov and Ignatius Brianchaninov. Until this moment, the composition of the evening prayers was noticeably more sparse (they can be found in Old Believer publications) and essentially represented a greatly abbreviated Compline. In ancient times, separate evening prayers did not exist at all: in the first centuries Christian history There was only a general conciliar prayer, which was supplemented by personal petitions.

The beginning of the formation of the prayer rule dates back to XII century, when Bishop Kirill of Turov, nicknamed by his descendants “Chrysostom, who shone above all others in Rus',” created a cycle of 21 prayers for the entire week: one after each Vespers, Matins and hours. And although it was intended for distribution in monasteries, it quickly became popular: the cycle is known from many lists of Old Russian and South Slavic origin of the 13th and subsequent centuries, and was repeatedly included in prayer books late XVI centuries and XVII centuries.

It still remains unclear when the prayer rule for monks, created by Kirill of Turov, was transformed into a cell rule for the laity. According to the testimony of Saint Athanasius Sakharov, already in the XIII-XIV centuries. In Rus', the practice of laymen independently performing liturgical services became widespread, and Compline and the Midnight Office began to be perceived as private prayers in the evening and in the morning.

In 1522, Francis Skaryna prepared and published the “Small Travel Book” - the Psalter with Recitation, in which the author included two of his akathists with personalized acrostics. Subsequently, it became the basis for many Akathists of the 16th-17th centuries, which, in addition to following the usual services of the daily circle, began to include morning and evening prayers for cell reading (shortened Compline and Midnight Office with additional prayers), rules for communion and prayers before it.

In the 18th century, the place of Akathists was taken by Prayer Books. The sequence of morning and evening prayers takes its final form.

Traditions of reading evening prayers

Despite the fact that another name for evening prayers is prayers for sleep, it is not recommended to read them immediately before bed. Late in the evening, due to fatigue, it can be very difficult to concentrate on the words of the prayer and give it due attention, so better than prayer evening reading in free minutes before dinner or even earlier.

To read bedtime prayers for those coming, it is advisable to retire, light a lamp or candle and stand in front of the icon of the saint whose name you bear. First, you should sign yourself with the sign of the cross and make several bows or bows to the ground. Tune in to an internal dialogue with the Lord. And only then begin to fulfill the prayer rule: it is better out loud or in a low voice, pondering the meaning of the prayer. They end their evening prayers with thanksgiving to God for the gift of communication and contrition for their inattention.

Some Orthodox families have a tradition of reading the evening prayer rule together: usually before dinner or on special special days.

IN modern tradition Evening prayers are often combined with prayers for living and already dead relatives, for benefactors, for those at war, for the Fatherland and for the whole world. On the days of the twelve feasts and their feasts, the troparion, kontakion, tribute with a verse and the magnification of this holiday are added to them, and on the days of Great Lent - the prayer of Ephraim the Syrian. On Easter and the entire following week, prayers for the sleep of those coming are not read; instead, the Easter hour is sung.

In this case, the chosen method of reading the rules will not matter to the Lord, the main thing is that there is deep faith and a desire to serve him sincerely.

These texts were compiled by clergy in the Church Slavonic language; unfortunately, this language is forgotten by many today and is difficult to perceive visually; previously it was included in the compulsory curriculum studied in schools. Today it is studied only by philologists and those who are planning to become a clergyman.

Today, the texts of most evening prayers are adapted to modern man, that is, they can be read in Russian, so their meaning becomes more clear.

Prayer of Macarius the Great

Also, in evening prayers, people often turn to God with a request for forgiveness of sins. This is due to the fact that night is a time of rest, but in this state a person is weak, since demons can take possession of his soul, exposing it to various temptations and temptations that are very difficult to fight.

So that demons do not visit and it is easier to cope with their temptations, it is necessary to cleanse the soul through repentance.

In addition, the rules read in the evening, it is important for a Christian to turn to his Guardian Angel. Each person who has undergone the rite of baptism has his own Guardian Angel, who protects his soul and body, tells his ward what to do in this or that case.

It is known that the symbol of the Christian faith is the Cross, therefore there is a prayer to it. Everyone knows that the Cross symbolizes the sacrifice made by Jesus Christ for the sins committed by humanity. The sign of the cross means protection from the forces of darkness, so it is important not to forget to cross yourself when reading the evening rules.

When to read the words of the prayer for the coming sleep

The bedtime prayer is usually very short, but extremely effective and efficient. With its help, you can put your thoughts in order, and also protect yourself from many diseases, misfortunes and failures.

Why pray before going to bed?

Nowadays, a person communicates with the Lord only when he needs something. At any other time, he simply forgets about the existence of God or does not believe in him at all. However, if some kind of life shock occurs or a person gets sick, he immediately remembers God and asks him to help. This algorithm in itself is incorrect, because a person should always be grateful to the Lord, regardless of material wealth, state of health or mood. Many troubles, catastrophes and misfortunes happen in the world, as a person begins to forget about his connection with God. If you forget about the Lord or reproach him for insufficient support, you can completely lose the Lord’s attention. Therefore, it is important to always be in touch with God and be sure to read prayers for sleep.
