Drawing “Autumn Landscape”: Multicolored Strokes.
Do you think you can only mix paints?
But no! You can mix colors with felt-tip pens and pencils, and even pens (ballpoint or gel).
This technique is called “multi-colored strokes.”
To work with this technique you will need:
landscape sheet (it is more convenient to draw on a separate sheet than in an album); graphite pencil (simple);
eraser;
markers (or colored pencils, or colored pens).

In this technique, the drawing is painted over not solidly, as we usually draw with felt-tip pens or pencils, but with strokes. That’s why the technique is called “multi-colored strokes.”
The colors will indeed mix, but not physically, as happens when mixing paints, but optically.
For example, mixed yellow and blue paint, it turned out green. But when mixing strokes, the situation is different: both blue and yellow strokes are drawn side by side. And if you look at the work from afar, these strokes merge and appear green.
Try drawing a frog and shading it with blue and yellow strokes. Look at it from afar... Green?

So, with a simple pencil we draw a landscape. Why did we choose autumn?
Autumn, especially the period we call “Indian summer,” is the brightest time of the year. What flowers are there in nature then!


Let's start shading. To start, we took a light green felt-tip pen.
Weed we hatch in the direction of its growth.


Sky. Shades of blue, blue colors. The strokes are horizontal, long and short. We leave the clouds unshaded.


Sun. Yellow, orange, red colors.
Strokes in a circle.


Horizon. In the sky closer to the horizon we will add purple strokes. This will make the sky seem more picturesque.


Tree foliage.
If we change the direction of the strokes, the trees will appear more lush.

We continue to shade the grass.
It’s not worth focusing on one subject, for example, shading first one tree, then a bush.
Taking one color, we shade different objects with it. If the same color is present in different objects in the painting, it will look more harmonious.

4. Autumn applique. Application on the theme of autumn

I have long been fascinated by the Bob Ross school of painting. He created a quick technique for effective oil painting on canvas. And I believe that everyone can easily master it. But, for starters, we will use not oil, but artistic gouache. And instead of canvas, paper for watercolors. It is best to take A-3 format, but A-4 is also suitable.

We will carry out the work in stages. We draw with a dry brush, using only gouache.
We pick up blue paint with a brush (size 15-16, bristles, flat or round) and begin to cover the top of the sheet with it. We work from left to right, moving from top to bottom. As we move, there will be less and less paint on the brush and the color of our future sky will change less saturated. In the center of the sheet we leave two unpainted places. These will be clouds.

Now we need paint that is a tone darker or a slightly different tone. I added violet to my blue. Draw the horizon line with the resulting color and cover the sheet from there downwards, leaving a white spot in the center. This is our future lake. Don’t forget that the brush should be dry .After there is absolutely no paint left on the brush, we shade the horizon line so that the border becomes a smooth transition. We also pass the brush along the lake. Do not forget that we are working from left to right.

Now interesting point for beginning artists.Mountains are often painted using a palette knife.Not everyone has one, so we will use a kitchen knife.Drawing mountains.To do this we need black and blue paint.To get it, take a little black and add it to the blue. We put paint on the tip of a knife and try to draw mountains. They will consist of the most high peak in the center and lower ones at the edges. We draw with the entire flat surface of the knife. Let's try to draw gentle slopes for our mountains. Remove the excess paint with a knife.

Our mountains should dry out a little. Therefore, for now let's work on the clouds in the sky. Ideally, first draw the clouds, and then start drawing the mountains. But, as always, there is not enough time, so I do it faster and more practical for myself... So, the clouds. They will be soft pink. To do this, mix a drop of red gouache with white. With the resulting color, we begin to draw clouds in place of the white spots in the sky. I use bristles number 12. I work with the tip of the brush, poking. The brush is positioned in my hand at an angle of 90 degrees to the clouds. I explain this method to the children as “drip-drip-drip”. Not strokes, but point-to-point touches of the paper with a brush. Often, often, often. Now we need to draw the upper border of the clouds. It will be white. We paint on the brush white paint and drip-drip-drip along the upper border of the cloud, climbing onto the blue color. Let's imagine that there is not one cloud, but a group. Another cloud floats under the top one. Let's draw its upper border with white. There should be a lot of white paint on the brush so that it stood out well against the pink background. In this way we draw the clouds to the left and right of the mountains.... Well, while we were drawing the clouds, our mountains dried out slightly. Now for an equally interesting activity. We need to make them more voluminous. To do this, we’ll use a knife white paint and apply it to the right half of the mountains. It will be more illuminated. We will work from the middle of the mountain to the right edge. The paint will not lie evenly, it will mix slightly with the black background, but this is what we need. We draw from the top to the foot of the mountains Let's draw several white halves of the mountains, which will be located below the main peak, i.e. closer to you.

Now let's mix white paint with blue, we need a light blue color (not blue, darker). Using a thin brush (pony, squirrel, kolinsky, synthetic - 3 sizes) apply the resulting shade to the left side of the mountains. From the top along the slope, from the center to the left edge. You see how our mountains immediately changed, how voluminous they became.

Let's continue... Again, using dry bristles, the same one that painted the sky (we didn't wash it after the sky), using black paint we "paint" the spots on the left, right and in the center (below the mountains). We take the paints just a little at a time, so that the spots the result was black, translucent. And dry, this is important. When there is no black paint left on the brush, you need to draw one detail: with strong pressure on the brush, apply vertical, barely noticeable stripes across the lake. Longer in the center, shorter on the sides. This is a reflection of the mountains and bushes (which we haven't drawn yet) in the lake.

Let's move on to more cheerful tones. We will paint autumn foliage. For this we will need yellow, red, red gouache and a bristle brush of size 12-13. Let's start with yellow gouache. Drip-drip-drip over the black spots, this is foliage. Draw on the spot like would be islands. Just like in the clouds, we’ll walk along the tops of the trees with yellow paint.

Using brown paint and a thin brush (squirrel, pony, kolonka - 1-2 sizes) we draw tree trunks in the foreground. The trunks on the left side of the work are illuminated, so we highlight the illuminated areas of the trunk with white paint.

We will paint the foliage of these trees with yellow and red paints. Below the mountains, in place of the black spots, we will draw bushes. Tip: To make the foliage more realistic, dip the brush first in red, then in yellow paint and, without mixing them, let's start drawing the foliage: again, drip-drip-drip. It is very convenient to draw foliage on bushes and trees using a fan brush.

So that we can clearly see the perspective, we will draw a birch tree in the background. Since it is closer to us, it looks larger relative to other trees. First, a black trunk with branches, then apply white paint to the trunk with a knife. And finish the birch by painting it yellow foliage. You can spice up the picture with red paint, painting the leaves here and there.

The trees are already completely bare, the leaves have fallen off. The sky hangs low with gray clouds. But there are also very pleasant days in late autumn. Suddenly the rain stops and it gets a little warmer, and fog swirls above the ground. It's easy to breathe...

Stage two: watercolor paints paint over the drawing.
Let's start by filling the background. To get blurry tones, we use the technique of tinting the paper in a wet way.
I would like to remind you of the raw toning technique. Moisten a sheet of paper with water using broad strokes with a wide brush. Then by wet leaf We apply paint of the color we need and one that matches the given color scheme of the picture. We apply it so that the borders of the paint touch, even slightly overlap each other. So you can highlight the earth with one color, and the sky with another, and the border between them becomes blurred.
When drawing gloomy, rainy, cloudy weather, we will use gray, black, purple, brown, dark blue... a range of colors.
To fill the sky we will use purple watercolor, iron blue and ultramarine.




Paint over the tree trunk. To do this, we take black watercolor, natural umber and sepia.


Fill the bottom part of the drawing. For autumn withered grass we use natural umber and burnt sienna.



We paint the house. For the walls we use golden ocher and natural sienna; for the roof - dark red kraplak and sepia.





Let's draw the background. To do this, take a brush with stiff bristles and draw the trees using the “poke” method.



Using short strokes we set the texture of the blades of grass in the foreground.



Let's paint the leaves on the tree and grass with golden ocher.


Use black paint to shade the foliage of the trees and emphasize the texture of the trunk of the nearby tree.


For the puddle we will use the same paints as for the sky: violet watercolor, iron blue and ultramarine.



You can finish the drawing here, but I suggest third stage: draw the details of the drawing with wax pencils.
Use a black wax pencil to highlight the gray clouds.


Introduce black, dark blue and purple pencils at the top of the sky. We place the strokes horizontally, easily. Emphasizing rather than overpowering the texture of the paint.



Using a black pencil we highlight the trunk and branches of the tree.



Insert a dark green pencil into the grass.


Use a yellow pencil to highlight the shadows on the walls of the house.



Looking closely at the drawing, we see that there is not enough foliage on the tree. Therefore, we take a brush with stiff bristles and golden ocher and, using the “poke” method, apply paint to the crown of the tree and under the tree.
