History of creation

The history of the creation of the story is connected with real events. A. Kuprin was a friend of the family of Governor Lyubimov. While watching the family album, the Lyubimovs told Alexander Ivanovich an interesting love story. A telegraph official was in love with the governor's wife. The woman collected his letters and made sketches for them. Once she received a gift from her admirer: a gold-plated chain and a pendant in the shape of an Easter egg.

Work on the work began in September 1910, as evidenced by the author's letters addressed to colleagues in the pen. At first, Alexander Ivanovich was going to write a story. But he was so inspired by the artistic transformation of the story he heard that the work turned out to be much larger than it was intended. Created Kuprin "Garnet Bracelet" for about 3 months. He wrote to Batyushkov about the progress of the work. In one of the letters, the writer admitted that he had difficulties associated with his "ignorance in music." Nevertheless, Alexander Ivanovich valued the "Garnet Bracelet" very much, so he did not want to "crumple" it.

For the first time the work saw the world on the pages of the magazine "Earth" in 1911. In the criticism of the work, emphasis was placed on his ideas and expressive "psychological situations".

Subject

In order to catch the ideological sound of the story "The Garnet Bracelet", its analysis should begin with a description of the main problem.

Motif of love has always been common in the literature. The masters of the pen revealed different facets of this feeling, trying to understand how it affects a person. In the work of A. Kuprin, this motive takes pride of place. main topic"Garnet Bracelet" - unrequited love. The problematics of the work is dictated by the specified theme.

The events of the story unfold at the Sheins' dacha. The author begins the work with landscape sketches. The end of summer did not please with good weather, but in early September, nature compensated for the gloomy August with sunny days. Reading the work further, it is easy to guess that the landscapes not only help to immerse yourself in the countryside atmosphere, but also symbolize the changes in the life of the main character Vera Nikolaevna Sheina: her life with her husband was gray and boring until the woman received an unusual gift.

At the beginning of the work, the reader observes only two heroes - the Shein spouses. The author focuses on the fact that the love between these people has faded away, or rather, “turned into a feeling of lasting, true, true friendship.”

The system of images is supplemented in an episode reproducing the celebration of the princess's name day.

The holiday is remembered by the stories of Prince Vasily Lvovich about the telegraph operator's unrequited love for his wife. On the same day, Vera Nikolaevna received a garnet bracelet and a letter signed with initials as a gift. The woman told about a strange gift to her husband, father's friend and brother. They decided to find the author of the letter.

It turned out that the gift was presented by the official Zheltkov, who was madly in love with the princess. The brother of Vera Nikolaevna returned the bracelet to the man. After an explanation with the Sheins, Zheltkov committed suicide. He left a note to his beloved, in which he asked to play a Beethoven sonata if Vera remembered him. In the evening, the woman fulfilled the request of the deceased and finally felt that the man had forgiven her.

"Garnet Bracelet" is filled with reflections of love that escape from the lips of the characters. These thoughts are like keys to the door, behind which are hidden answers about the essence of a tender, but sometimes ruthless feeling. However, the author does not try to impose his point of view. The reader must draw his own conclusions. To understand what the writer teaches, you need to analyze the actions of the characters, their characters and destinies.

The work of A. Kuprin is filled with symbols. main role plays a garnet bracelet, hence the title of the story. The decoration symbolizes true love. The bracelet contains five gems. In one of the parables of King Solomon, they meant love, passion and anger. The interpretation of the meaning of the title of the story will be incomplete without taking into account the symbolic component. Also, Beethoven's sonata attracts special attention, which in this context can be interpreted as a symbol of unhappy, but eternal love.

The work develops idea that true love does not disappear from the heart without a trace. Main thought- sincere love exists, you just need to be able to notice and accept it.

Composition

Features of the composition of the work are manifested both at the formal and at the semantic level. First, A. Kuprin refers the reader to Beethoven's sonnet by means of an epigraph. In the finale, it turns out that the musical masterpiece plays the role of a symbol. With the help of this symbolic image, a frame is created that enhances the ideological sound.

The order of the plot elements is not violated. The exposition - landscape sketches, acquaintance with the Shein family, a story about the upcoming holiday. The plot - Vera Nikolaevna receiving a gift. The development of events - a story about name days, the search for a gift addressee, a meeting with Zheltkov. The climax is Zheltkov's confession that only death will kill his feelings. The denouement is the death of Zheltkov and the story of how Vera listens to the sonata.

Love is an extraordinary feeling, which, unfortunately, is not given to every person to know. The topic of today's article is Kuprin's story "Garnet Bracelet". The meaning of the title is deeper than it might seem. at first sight. What is the theme of the story? What does the decoration given to the main character symbolize?

"Garnet bracelet": content

The refined countess once fell in love with an inconspicuous telegraph operator. He did not seek meetings with her, was not intrusive, only the letters that the secular beauty received occasionally spoke of his feelings. On her name day, the princess received pearl earrings as a gift from her husband. It was a sophisticated, exquisite gift. And in the evening, the messenger handed the maid a small square box with the words "Pass it personally into the hands of the mistress." It contained a garnet bracelet.

The meaning of the title of Kuprin's story is quite simple to explain. The unrequitedly in love telegraph operator once nevertheless realized that his languor would not lead to anything good. He wrote several more letters to the princess, and to one of them he attached an ornament made of low-grade gold and poorly polished stones. This gift caused indignation among the relatives of the main character.

The husband and brother of the princess went to the telegraph operator in order to stop the series of love letters that threatened the reputation of the noble family. They succeeded. The telegraph operator committed suicide. And only after his death, the princess realized that love had happened in her life, which millions of women dream of, but which men are no longer capable of.

What is the meaning of the name "Garnet Bracelet"? The telegraph operator could have given the princess earrings made of turquoise or, however, Kuprin preferred that his heroine receive from her admirer an ornament made of stones of bright red color - the color of love. The meaning of the name "Garnet Bracelet" should be sought in the symbolism of precious stones. Pomegranate has always been associated with love, fidelity, passion.

So the telegraph operator died. The princess realized that she would never meet a person who would love her so selflessly. This is the summary of The Pomegranate Bracelet. The plot of the work, however, is not so simple. It has many more characters. In addition, Kuprin's story is filled with symbols.

Vera Sheina

This is the name of the main character of Alexander Ivanovich Kuprin's story "Garnet Bracelet". She is beautiful, educated, moderately arrogant. Vera Sheina has no children, but she has a smart, kind, understanding husband. Vasily - leader nobility. The relationship of the spouses has long become more friendly. There is no passion between them. And has she ever been?

In order to reveal the theme of love in "Garnet Bracelet", you should talk about how the heroine treated her fan. His name was Zheltkov. He sent letters to the princess not for a year or two. Even seven years before the events described in the story, he overcame Vera. Then he fell silent for a long time. And only on the day of the name day he reminded her of himself again. Vera opened a small package and found a bracelet in it. Like all women, she first drew attention to the decoration, and only then to the letter. "Ah, it's him again," thought the princess. Zheltkov only irritated her.

Deep down, Vera Sheina dreams of passionate love. But like millions of women on earth, this feeling is not familiar to her. True love passed her by in the form of an unremarkable telegraph operator. About how great was the feeling of the unfortunate Zheltkov, the princess realized only after his death.

General Anosov

This is a minor character. But without him, the theme of love in "Garnet Bracelet" would not have been fully revealed. At the time of the publication of the story, Kuprin had already overcome the forty-year milestone. He was not old, but, probably, sad thoughts about the departed youth sometimes visited him. For the writer, the main theme of creativity was love. He, as already mentioned, believed that not everyone is capable of this feeling. And quite rarely, according to the prose writer, it was found among the last representatives of the Russian nobility.

General Anosov in the story expresses the point of view of the author. He is from the older generation. It is the general who helps the princess appreciate Zheltkov's feelings. It was after a conversation with him that Vera took a different look at the love of a telegraph operator. In Anosov, unlike other guests present at Sheina's name day, the story of the unfortunate author of love letters did not cause a smile, but rather admiration.

A significant role in revealing the love theme in "Garnet Bracelet" was played by the stories told by the old general. He told the young woman about two incidents that happened many years ago in the garrison where he served. These were love stories that ended very tragically.

Anna

The author gives a fairly detailed description of the characters who are not directly related to the main storyline. This is what gives the right to call "Garnet Bracelet" a story, not a story. Anna is Vera's sister. This is a young, attractive woman who is deprived of true love in the same way as the main character. But unlike Vera, she is a very passionate person. Anna constantly flirts with young officers, attends dinner parties, and carefully monitors her appearance. She does not love her husband, and therefore cannot be happy.

The image of a garnet bracelet

It is worth saying a few more words about the main "character" of Kuprin's story. Namely, the garnet bracelet. Zheltkov is a modest employee. He does not have money for an expensive gift for his beloved woman. The garnet bracelet once belonged to his great-grandmother. Zheltkov's mother was the last to wear this decoration.

The stones from the old bracelet were transferred to a new one, made of gold, although low-grade. He probably saved up for a long time for a gift to the princess. But the point, of course, is not the cost of this decoration. Zheltkov gave the princess the most precious thing - a bracelet that belonged to her mother.

Last letter

Kuprin's story about the tragedy of a lonely man who loves a woman who will never reciprocate. After a conversation with the brother of the princess, the telegraph operator wrote the last, suicide letter. And then he committed suicide. After his death, Vera asked pianist Jenny Reiter to play Beethoven's symphony, which Zheltkov loved so much. When she listened to this amazing music, she suddenly realized: he forgave her.

The role of the detail. Landscape and title. Kuprin shows the heroine against the backdrop of clear, sunny days, in silence and solitude (resemblance to Tatyana Larina, also a married princess). Outwardly, royally calm, delicately feeling, selfless, helping her husband "make ends meet", tenderly loving her younger sister and General Anosov ("grandfather"). Vera, who “slept” all her life, woke up only when Zheltkov entered her life, paying a high price for the awakening of his beloved. Vera Nikolaevna, the wife of the marshal of the nobility, Vasily Lvovich Shein, in relation to whom passionate love has long passed, "passed into a feeling of lasting, faithful, true friendship."

“It was gold, low-grade, very thick, but puffy and completely covered on the outside with small old poorly polished garnets, but in the middle of the bracelet, surrounded by some small green pebble, five beautiful caboton garnets, each the size of a pea, rose. When Vera successfully turned the bracelet in front of the light bulb, then in them, deep under their smooth ovoid surface, lovely deep red living lights suddenly lit up.

The meaning of the title of the work Somewhere deep in the soul of the heroine, “thick red living lights” lit up. She feels a slight change in herself, not yet understanding what is happening and how important it is. According to an old legend of the Zheltkov family, the bracelet has the ability to convey the gift of foresight to the women who wore it. Why? There are only six stones: five red and one green. Man has five physical senses, but there is also a metaphysical sense, the sixth: intuition. And if we consider the geometry of the stones of the bracelet, then it will be a circle with a dot inside, which looks like an eye, a “third eye”. These signs accumulate energy that will give women the gift of foresight. The garnet bracelet became the starting point, the support that Vera lacks to wake up. The bracelet turned out to be the fire that could melt Vera's heart.

Why is the image of General Anosov introduced into the story? (Ch. 4). What is the meaning of this image and the story of his love? (ch. 7) What is real love for the general? (p. 138, 140)

The theme of the "little man" An official with a funny surname, quiet and inconspicuous, grows into a tragic hero, with the power of his love rises above petty fuss, life's inconveniences, decency. He turns out to be a man in no way inferior in nobility to aristocrats. Love exalted him, became suffering and the only meaning of life. (farewell letter-p. 151) Departing from life, Zheltkov blesses his beloved: "Hallowed be thy name." Dead Zheltkov acquires "deep importance, ... as if he had learned ... some deep and sweet secret ..." (ch. 12, p. 154)

The role of the detail in the story Bad weather is replaced by warm, clear days. 13-number of guests at the name day of Vera Nikolaevna. The six stones in the bracelet are five red and one green: five physical senses and a metaphysical sense, the sixth: intuition. The geometry of the stones of the bracelet is a circle with a dot inside, something similar to the "third eye".

One of the most famous works of Alexander Kuprin is "Garnet Bracelet". What genre does the story about the unrequited love of a modest official Zheltkov belong to? More often this work is called a story. But it also contains features characteristic of the story. It turns out that it is not easy to define the genre of "Garnet Bracelet".

In order to do this, one should recall the content of Kuprin's work, as well as consider the features of both the story and the story.

What is a story?

Under this literary term is understood the composition of small prose. A synonym for this word is "novella". Russian writers usually called their works stories. A short story is a concept that is more common in foreign literature. There is no significant difference between them. Both in the first and in the second case, we are talking about a work of a small volume, in which there are only a few characters. An important feature is the presence of only one storyline.

The structure of such a work is quite simple: plot, climax, denouement. In Russian literature of the 19th century, a story was often called what is commonly called a story today. A striking example is the well-known works of Pushkin. The writer created several stories, the plot of which was allegedly told to him by a certain Belkin, and called them stories. In each of these works there are few characters and only one storyline. So why didn't Pushkin call his collection Belkin's Stories? The fact is that the literary terminology of the 19th century is somewhat different from the modern one.

But the genre affiliation of Chekhov's works is beyond doubt. Events in the stories of this writer revolve around any, at first glance, minor incidents that allow the characters to look at their lives differently. There are no superfluous characters in Chekhov's works. His stories are clear and concise. The same can be said about the prose of later authors - Leonid Andreev, Ivan Bunin.

What is a story?

The work of this genre occupies an intermediate position between the short story and the novel. In foreign literature, the concept of "story" is missing. English and French authors created either short stories or novels.

In ancient Rus', any prose work was called a story. Over time, the term has taken on a narrower meaning. Until the middle of the 19th century, it was understood as an essay of a small size, but larger than a story. There are usually significantly fewer characters in the story than in the War and Peace epic, but more than in Chekhov's The Wallet. Nevertheless, modern literary critics sometimes find it difficult to determine the genre of a work written more than 200 years ago.

In the story, events revolve around the protagonist. Actions take place in a short period of time. That is, if the work tells about how the hero was born, graduated from school, university, made a successful career, and then, closer to his seventieth birthday, died safely in his bed, then this is a novel, but not a story.

If only one day in the life of a character is shown, and there are two or three characters in the plot, this is a story. Perhaps the clearest definition of the story would be the following: "a work that can not be called either a novel or a short story." What is the genre of "Garnet Bracelet"? Before answering this question, let's recall the content.

"Garnet bracelet"

A work can be confidently attributed to the genre of a story if it deals with two or three characters. There are more heroes here.

Vera Sheina is married to a kind and well-bred man. She has nothing to do with the telegraph operator who regularly writes love letters to her. Moreover, she never saw his face. Vera's indifference is replaced by a feeling of anxiety, and then pity and regret after she receives a garnet bracelet as a gift from the telegrapher.

The genre of this work could be easily determined if Kuprin excluded such characters as General Anosov, Vera's brother and sister, from the narrative. But these characters are not just present in the plot. They, and especially the general, play a role.

Let us recall several stories included by Kuprin in the "Garnet Bracelet". The genre of a work can be determined in the process of its artistic analysis. And for that, you need to go back to the content.

Crazy Love

The officer fell in love with the wife of the regimental commander. This woman was not attractive, and besides, she was a morphine addict. But love is evil ... The romance did not last long. An experienced woman soon got tired of her young lover.

Garrison life is boring and monotonous. The military wife, apparently, wanted to brighten up everyday life with thrills, and she demanded proof of love from her former lover. Namely, throw yourself under a train. He did not die, but remained disabled for the rest of his life.

Love triangle

Another story from the garrison life is told about another story included in the "Garnet Bracelet". Its genre could be easily determined if it were a separate work. It would be a classic story.

The wife of a brave officer, highly respected by the soldiers, fell in love with a lieutenant. A passionate romance ensued. The traitor did not hide her feelings at all. Moreover, the husband was well aware of her relationship with her lover. When the regiment was sent to war, she threatened him with a divorce if something happened to the lieutenant. The man went to sapper work instead of his wife's lover. Checked guard posts for him at night. He did everything to save the health and life of his opponent.

General

These stories are not random. They were told to Vera by General Anosov, one of the most striking characters in the Garnet Bracelet. The genre of this work would not raise doubts if this colorful hero did not exist in it. In that case, it would be a story. But the general distracts the reader from the main storyline. In addition to the above stories, he also tells Vera about some facts from his biography. In addition, Kuprin paid attention to other minor characters (for example, sister of Vera Sheina). The structure of the work from this has become more complex, the plot is deep and interesting.

The stories told by Anosov impress the main character. And his reasoning about love makes the princess look differently at the feelings of a faceless telegraph operator.

What genre is "Garnet Bracelet"?

It was said above that in literature there was no clear division between such concepts as a story and a story before. But this was only at the beginning of the 19th century. The work referred to in this article was written by Kuprin in 1910. By that time, the concepts used by modern literary critics had already been formed.

The writer defined his work as a story. Calling "Garnet Bracelet" a story is wrong. However, this mistake is forgivable. As one well-known literary critic said, not without a share of irony, no one is perfectly able to distinguish a story from a story, but philology students love to argue on this topic.

Name A.I. Kuprin was glorified by such works as "Olesya", "Shulamith", "Duel", "White Poodle", "Garnet Bracelet". The story "Garnet Bracelet" (1907) is a classic of Russian love prose of the 20th century. It fully reflects the writer's ideas about love, as well as his views on society and contemporaries.
The work is based on the story of a deep and strong feeling of an insignificant official Zheltkov for Princess Vera Nikolaevna Sheina. This feeling, described in the story, turns it into a true work of art, a real hymn to high and bright love.
Of course, in the "Garnet Bracelet" the leading theme is the love theme. The author considers it in different aspects, and all the problems of the work are connected with it. The essence of love, the attitude towards it in the modern writer's society, the ability to love, the significance of this feeling in a person's life - this is the range of issues that Kuprin covers.
The writer shows the outwardly prosperous, but internally completely empty life of the Russian nobility. Princess Vera Nikolaevna, her husband, sister, brother - they are all, in their essence, deeply unhappy people. Perfectly brought up and educated, freely discussing high topics, they, nevertheless, do not know how to live a full life, they do not know how to translate their reasoning into practice. All this comes from the fact, according to Kuprin, that contemporary people have forgotten how to love. And this concerns, first of all, the nobility.
The Shein family - Prince Vasily Lvovich and his wife Vera Nikolaevna - would seem to be an exemplary family. But the writer immediately tells us that there is no love between these people. The cold beauty Princess Vera respects her husband, considers him her friend, but nothing more. Once upon a time, these people were connected by a feeling, but all this remained in the past: “... the former passionate love for her husband has long since turned into a feeling of strong, faithful, true friendship ...” I think Vasily Lvovich experienced approximately the same feelings for his beautiful wife .
Unhappy in love and the sister of Vera Nikolaevna, Anna Nikolaevna Friesse. Kuprin notes that she was the exact opposite of Princess Vera: temperamental, noisy, cheerful, loving life. But this woman also felt the emptiness of her existence - she did not have true love: she did not love her husband, and numerous novels did not bring happiness to the woman.
In the description of the Friesse family, the following detail is important: the children of Anna Nikolaevna were in poor health, ill with scrofula. I think this is largely due to the fact that they were born without love.
The brother of Vera Nikolaevna and Anna Nikolaevna - Nikolai Nikolaevich - was generally a convinced bachelor and looked at love somewhat haughtily, mockingly and contemptuously. I think this feeling was not included in his system of values at all.
What, according to Kuprin, explained this state of affairs? The writer believed that the attitude towards love in society as a whole had changed. People stopped attaching importance to this feeling, choosing other priorities for themselves. But human nature is so arranged that it cannot do without love, the soul of everyone strives to experience this feeling at least for a short time. It is with him that our divine essence is connected - our soul.
The attitude to love in modern society for Kuprin is accurately characterized by the words of General Anosov, an old family friend of Vera Nikolaevna. This elderly man symbolizes the older generation, wiser, and appreciating, in spite of everything, love: "... people's love has taken such vulgar forms and has descended simply to some kind of everyday convenience, to a little entertainment." Anosov, and along with him, I think, Kuprin, believes that men are to blame for this state of affairs: “Men are to blame, jaded at twenty years old, with chicken bodies and hare souls, incapable of strong desires, heroic deeds, tenderness and adoration before love. And then the general continues: “They say that all this happened before. And if it didn’t happen, then didn’t the best minds and souls of mankind dream and yearn for it - poets, novelists, musicians, artists?
And now, in the lives of the heroes, confirmation of just such a sublime, spiritualized, bright, pure love appears. She was awarded from above to the poor official Zheltkov, who fell in love with Vera Nikolaevna. Love became for this man the meaning of life, and Princess Sheina turned into an inaccessible deity.
It is important that Zheltkov never sought Vera Nikolaevna's reciprocity - the difference in their social status was too great. It was enough for him just to look at this woman, to breathe the same air with her.
As a sign of his feelings, this man gave the princess a garnet bracelet - the most expensive thing he had. This bracelet has become for Zheltkov and everyone around him a symbol of pure disinterested feeling, true love, which is so scarce in this world and which everyone needs so much.
At the end of the story, Zheltkov passes away. The husband and brother of Vera Nikolaevna ask him to leave the princess alone - they see in the love of a simple official an insult to their family, their family honor. Zheltkov promises to do this and commits suicide, not knowing how to live without Vera Nikolaevna, not imagining the meaning of his existence without her. In a farewell letter, this man blesses and deifies the princess: “Leaving, I say in delight: “Hallowed be thy name.”
Thus, in Kuprin's story "Garnet Bracelet" the problems associated with the theme of love are revealed. The author shows that love is the most necessary and wonderful feeling on earth, but it is very rare in the contemporary writer's society. However, because of this, love is valued even more, turning into a short but precious moment of life. These moments are like grenades in the bracelet of the official Zheltkov, who gave his life to his beloved woman, sanctified her dull and gray existence with the divine light of high feeling.
