Red hieroglyphs on the smartphone screen. How to uninstall Chinese Baidu antivirus? How to uninstall a program with Chinese characters

Asian culture is permeated with the spirit of mysticism and mystery. One can imagine how difficult it is to penetrate the essence of all Chinese legends and stories, but only through them can one understand the subtle spiritual organization of the inhabitants of the Middle Kingdom. Best of all, the mentality of the Chinese reflects their writing. Have you ever wondered how many Chinese hieroglyphs?

The legend of the origin of Chinese writing

Those who study the history of China or often visit this country have probably noticed that the population communicates in different dialects. In some cases, residents of one province may not understand the speech of their neighbors from another territorial district at all. This oddity is all the more pronounced against the background of a single script. Wherever you live, you will always write in exactly the same way, which indicates a huge difference between writing and speaking in China.

If you are wondering how many hieroglyphs are in Chinese, then you should carefully study ancient legend about the emergence of writing in the Celestial Empire. The great Cang Jie is considered to be the father of Chinese hieroglyphic writing. He lived in the twenty-sixth century BC and was a court historian at the court of the emperor. During this period on earth, the Chinese coexisted with spirits that constantly deceived ordinary people. But the wise Cang Ze managed to penetrate into the plan of Heaven and sketched the outlines of all the objects he knew, turning them into hieroglyphs. From this moment evil spirits are in great sorrow. They ceased to influence the life of the Chinese, who acquired great knowledge.

How Chinese writing developed

Since the appearance of the first hieroglyphs (it is believed that there were only twelve of them), writing in the country began to develop rapidly. Then no one thought about how many hieroglyphs in the Chinese language. New ones periodically supplemented the existing ones, forming a language base. During the Han Dynasty, there was big job according to the count of hieroglyphs, at that time there were just over nine thousand.

Over time, not only the number of hieroglyphs in the Chinese language increased, but their writing also became more complicated. Quite a few characters were unavailable ordinary people who could not write them correctly. This significantly affected the literacy of the Chinese population. Therefore, since the middle of the last century, the country has been undergoing a reform to simplify the writing of hieroglyphs. This program helps to increase the number of educated citizens.

How many hieroglyphs are there in Chinese, what are hieroglyphs and how are they classified

We all imagine what a hieroglyph is, but from a scientific point of view, it can be described as a written sign that carries a semantic load. It can mean a sound, a syllable, or a whole word. Many scientists draw a parallel between the hieroglyph and the pentagram, since both signs have some imagery. It is this fact that makes it difficult to learn the Chinese language, because Europeans perceive the hieroglyph as a carrier of direct information. And for the Chinese, it is most often just a direction for thought, a kind of boundary in which it is necessary to fit some image.

Before answering the question of how many hieroglyphs are in the Chinese language, it is necessary to find out how they are formed. According to the method of formation, they can be divided into the following categories:

  • pictographic;
  • ideographic;
  • phonographic.

Each group has its own characteristics of education and writing. For example, the simplest are pictographic hieroglyphs - they are repelled from the form and appearance the depicted object. Ideographic ones are formed from two different hieroglyphs. They can symbolize a whole word or phenomenon. But the phonographic hieroglyphs, which are more than eighty percent in Chinese, are a complex symbiosis of phonetics and key, where the latter is responsible for the meaning, and the second conveys the sound.

Chinese writing. How many hieroglyphs are displayed in dictionaries?

It is difficult to determine the correct number of Chinese characters, because some of them have a narrow focus and are not used in ordinary life. Many are applicable only when reading ancient texts, and only historians know them. According to the latest data, the Chinese language contains from 50 to 84 thousand characters.

But the Chinese themselves will never be able to learn them all. Dictionaries usually contain no more than seven thousand characters necessary for literate writing.

If you are planning to learn the language of the Middle Kingdom, then keep in mind that you will not have to spend years memorizing a mass of difficult-to-write characters. The average Chinese with higher education knows no more than two thousand hieroglyphs. The same amount will be enough for you.

Please note that in contemporary literature more characters are used. Therefore, if you want to read Chinese authors freely, you will need to learn about three thousand characters. With such a knowledge base, you can feel absolutely confident and comfortable in China.

Here is the second article in the series Chinese characters which will introduce you to approximate number of characters in Chinese and also with some classification of Chinese characters.

How many characters are there in Chinese? Tens of thousands.

A person who is just starting to learn Chinese will definitely ask: “ And what, all these tens of thousands need to be learned? It's impossible!»

Not necessarily! Do you know that even for the Chinese themselves, knowledge of 8-10 thousand characters already indicates a very high level of literacy? And in order to read Chinese newspapers and magazines, it is enough to know 3-4 thousand of the most commonly used hieroglyphs.

(Once I had nothing to do and I decided to count the number of hieroglyphs in two parts of the “bamboos”, and I got about 1200 hieroglyphs. I counted according to the dictionary that was in the application - not so much, but this is considered an entry level).

The quantity seems to be sorted out. Is it possible to classify Chinese characters? Many sources agree on the following classification:

All existing signs in Chinese can be divided into 6 categories:

1. Figurative marks
Signs directly descended from the simplest pictograms. Over time, the drawings were schematized and modified and thus acquired modern look, very different from the original.
For example:
水 - water
日 - sun
木 - tree
雨 - rain

2. Signs
They indicate the approximate content of the concepts they designate.
For example:
上 - top
下 - bottom

3. Synthetic signs
They are a synthesis of several simple pictorial and indicative signs.
For example:
林 - forest (two trees)

4. Phonetic signs
They consist of two structural parts - a determinative (key), which is originally a pictogram and indicates the circle of concepts to which the word denoted by this hieroglyph belongs, and phonetics, which approximately conveys the sound of the hieroglyph.

The same key 木 (tree) is included in many hieroglyphs related to the "forest" theme.
For example:
松 (sōng) - pine,
树 - tree, to plant

The word denoted by the hieroglyph is phonetically identical to the word denoted by the phonetic, that is, the reading of the sign as a whole coincides with the reading of one of its parts - phonetics.

For example: 非 - (fēi) - being an independent hieroglyph, it is also a part of many hieroglyphs being their phonetics.
霏 - fēi - thick
匪 - fěi - robber, bandit

However, it is worth remembering that the phonetic may not completely coincide with its original reading.
For example:
松 (sōng) - pine (phonetic 公 - separately read as gōng, not as sōng, but something is the same: gONG and sONG)

5. Modified signs
Initially, this group includes hieroglyphs of all 4 listed categories, but with minor changes in individual elements.

6. Borrowed signs
These are hieroglyphs that are used to denote new concepts and terms. Most often, such hieroglyphs are formed according to the transcription-phonetic principle.

Now we have finished both with the classification and with the elements that make up the hieroglyph.

Finally, I would like to remind one important feature Chinese characters : any character expresses only famous qualities action or object without containing any grammatical functions. It acquires grammatical functions exclusively in a phrase or sentence, depending on its location in them, but the hieroglyph itself does not change in any way.
